Topic: Spring for Rocky raccoon

Does anybody know where I can get a spring for a rocky raccoon type puppet?

My puppet is larger than the commercial rockys.

A good commercial hardware store should have spring wire in stock and you can "roll your own."

The early ones came from old bedsprings.

Hi Dave,

How do you roll your own spring? Do you wrap the wire around something?

Dave's not here.

In answer to your question on rolling (or winding) springs... yes, you wrap it around something a bit smaller in diameter than the finished spring needs to be. Secure one end with some type of clamp. That will depend on the size you're making. Wind more than you think you will need... you can always cut it back. Very difficult to add more later. Once wound, carefully and slowly allow the coil to unwind some of the natural tension.

CAUTION: Protect your face and eyes! If the spring is accidentally released it will unwind like a tornado bent on killing you. Leather gloves are a good idea, too.
