The most difficult thing with this illusion is it's lack of availability.
I would LOVE to perform this illusion and it's hard to hold myself back from performing it. It is so heavily copyrighted that none of us will ever be able to get our desparate little hands on it. Oh well, that's the way life goes. I wouldn't want to rip off Fearson or Copperfield so I guess the only option is to enjoy watching it and just let this one go. -Chris.

The cardboard cutouts were in the nosebleed seats to give the impression of a sell-out, not the audience members placed behind the stage.
For those interested, the article referred to is the April 2001 issue of Magic. There was a really interesting article about the filming of that special by a person present at the tapings. Keep in mind, just because you saw audience members in the round doesn't necessarily mean they were there the whole time. The article mentioned that the 60 minute special we saw was shot over 8 days. For continuity purposes, some audience members had to come back 3 or 4 days in a row. Most of these tapings, only 3 or 4 illusions were performed in the show, and they would reshoot. |

This illusion is very impressive like his 'LAISER' Illusion.
The Laiser is more powerfull Illusion for me. But this is only my opinion. |

Cardboard cut outs? You can make one just using cardboard cutouts, can't you? Also a modified pant similar to Fantastic Floatation in reverse and a shell for the upper torso with a ******. Send me $6.95 and I'll sell you the plans. (just joking)

I just saw something along the lines of Copperfield's lazer illusion. Here's the link: http://www.masterofillusions.ca/master_o......ours.htm Although this looks cool, in the video it seems that it takes a long time to fill in the body portions, has anyone seen this live (not the Copperfield lazer but the link above.) Just a question about the effect. I have developed a similar effect from which I beleive is based on the same principles as Fearson/DC. Is it legal, (under the copyright and all) to perform this effect even though ive developed my own way, (in my eyes) of achieving the same "type" of effect, where a visual difference can be seen from the torso and legs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

There are so many illusions that seem similar. Andrew Maines sawing in half is one that comes to mind. It is similar in concept but different in performance. So I do not see a problem if you come out with your own illusion. Just make sure it is original in performance.

Well if it's based on the same principles of Fearson's, than is it really original? It really depends, man. You're tip-toeing on the line of copyright infringement. Honestly, I wouldn't do it. I suppose as long as you don't perform it on TV, or try to sell it, but even still...
Just my opinion, I'm sure others will beg to differ. But that's what forums are for!

Thanks Corey point well noted. I don't know how Copperfield / Fearson did their illusion, but I'm assuming that mine isn't that far off maybe with a different gimmick but that's it. But yeah I can see what you mean from the tip toeing thing, anyway thanks Corey

Troller I forgot to mention that I know how Maines did his bisection and I know what you mean about the same concept and all. Just wondering did Copperfield also copyright the performance, not the laser thing just the movements, cause he would of copyrighted every action you do with this so I dunno, anyway thanks for the feedback. And it'll be a long time before I perform it on tv, still doing only local gigs

Murcielago, I want to let you know that I am not trying to diss you or criticize you. If anything I'm trying to protect your butt. I don't want to see someone that's just doing a little experimenting for their own self use go down. If you want to make a video of yourself doing it, maybe show some friends or something, that's cool! But I wouldn't use it in actual shows, or try to re-sell it or anything. Not that you were planning on it, just saying.
By the way, you can't really copyright a movement. A copyright can only be placed on literature, or a name of something. For example, the name of the device 'The Clapper' is copyrighted. I'm sure DC has a copyright on the Tornado of Fire special which showcased the Laser Illusion, though. If not than CBS does.

Some very intersting points Corey. And yes you were correct, I'm not planning on re-selling it or anything. And I thank you for the sound, frank advice. that's very intersting on the copyright claim. I don't know if you know much about law, I know I don't, but if you cant copyright an action, then how is there such a strict control over this one trick, it just seems very odd that's all.

Generally, due to the difficulty of protecting our trade secrets, we tend to respect other creators by marking their effects as "untouchable," when in reality there is no true legal way of protecting them. A patent can protect an illusion, but forces you to reveal its workings (unless you just want to patent the aesthetics) so then, if someone "improves" on your patented effect. That person has the legal right to becuase of the public nature of patents. That person just can't make an "exact" duplicate of your design. Copyrighting involves exact words, images or the like. You can copyright your act (I know Houdini did this with his Water Torture Cell) but it cannot provide very much protection when it comes to the illusions in your show. Itellectual Property Laws can provide you with protection, however exactly how much, I cannot say. I am not a lawyer, or expert on this information, by any means. If I have made some error please correct me (or expound on the IP laws). If I'm not mistaken, though, there is a ton of this info already on the Café, all you have to do is a quick search.
