Hi everyone
I mainly post on the sideshow and escape forums, being a sideshow performer and escape artist, however I am fascinated by your subject and wonder where the best place to start is? I am not thinking of becoming a bizarrist or mentalist, more interested from an academic point of veiw, also, in how the basic techniques and psychology of your art can be applied to mine, in order to create a more rounded performence. In particular I am interested in cold reading, and the almost hypnotic control of volunteers shown by some mentalists. Many thanks David Straitjacket

From that perspective, I would recommend Eugene Burger's Strange Ceremonies and the video - Eugene Goes Bizarre - where Eugene gives a great introduction, input from performers and relates it back to performance. There are many lessons to be learned from what has transpired in the path of Bizarre Magick. I think a lot of can be used to help all of us to become better artists, Bizarrist or not.
For cold reading, I believe there was another thread recently dealing with that very subject. If ye seek, ye shall find......(hehehehehe, sorry laughing at my own little irony)

For an introduction to cold reading, especially if you want a complete overview for an academic perspctive, I recommend Ian Rowland's The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading (available only at Mr. Rowland's website) for the mechanics of cold reading, and Brad Henderson's book The Dance for the psychology of cold reading.

If you can get your hands on the Compleat Invocation books, you will have a massive resource on this topic. Also, look into the works of Charles Cameron and Tony "Doc" Shiels. Docc Hilford has published some interesting stuff on the topic and we may even have some more coming from our own T.C. Tahoe in his upcoming magazine.
Hope this helps! Lee Darrow, C.H.

Thanks for all your help guys. You have given me a lot to think about.
LOL. that link was especially helpful. I have met Calab a couple of times, I shall have to approach him for some advice. Magickman, what don't you get? You have lost me. Though the pope thing sounds fun, where can I get a book on that. I hear the job might be up for grabs soon Thanks again David

Compleat Invocation books
I have been reading a lot about these but I have yet to find them. Am I out of luck or is it justsomething that I'm having an issue with?

I would add, to the suggestions on cold reading, Richard Webster's books, in particular Quick and Effective Cold Reading. If you are just getting started and want to get somewhere right away, don't miss Lee Earle's The Gentle Art of Cold Reading, an excellent value.
