Hi all
I have a bit of a problem, my doves have got small mites mostly under their wings. The mites look like small wood splinters. (They are brown in colour and very thin.) Does anyone know what they are? (I think they may be feather mites.) And how to get rid of them? Many Thanks |

Hi Paul,
you can buy a spray or drops. A pigeon fancier I know (he's not picky with women) gets his from France, he does mine every so often. I'm sure you can get this over here. Next time I see him I will ask him. Matt |

Dabek,
The problem is easy to deal with. Put Sevin powder in a sock and dust the birds with it. Also do the perches and the cage. (I understand that it is even safe if they eat it. But then that won't kill mites either!) Next week they should be clear of them. Sometimes my road birds live in a cat carrier. (Don't say the "cat" word around them!) That way they get exposed to other people's luggage and items in the hotel, theater, park and casino storage areas. Not everyone is as clean as are our birds. It is a good idea to dust them when they come back from a show where they were exposed to the criters others share also. A sock full of Sevin gets to be a practical thing to have, if you have working doves. (It might even be good advice for some humans!) Bob Magic By Sander |

If you can't find Sevin powder, get some 3 in 1 powder for cats. (There's that word again Bob). Don't use the powder for dogs. Just spread the powder around under the wings being careful not to get it in their eyes.
As a preventative measure after you clean the Café and all, get a cage protector and hang it on the bars. They last for months and are well worth it.

Hi Paul,
I've always found that Johnsons Anti-Mite Spray for cage birds does the job. |

Sevin dust can be found at Walmart in the garden section. It's all we use for mite problems.

Go to a pet shop and talk to the owner. I have used a powder for mites that has a chicken on the bottles picture.
