Just something I'd thought I share:
On the plane back to Malaysia, my month old deck of Bikes performed fabulously. I figured this was because it was dry and that there would be less water causing the cards to 'stick' together. Once I reached KLIA the cards stuck together worse than when I was in Perth. This brings me to the following question: - When do you guys open a new deck of cards? When is it time for the 'old' deck to retire? |

I can't stand seeing a topic with no replies. This topic has been covered many, many times before. So, just for the record...
I retire cards when the need arises. It could be after several months or after a single show. I always have at least half a dozen working decks around. Card clips are a good investment. Here in New England the summers get brutaly humid, and any deck left out for more than 20 minutes is going to go limp and soggy. When flying, keep all cards on you. I found that ones you pack in your luggage come out with a permenant bow. Sometimes if a deck just doesn't feel right, right out of the box (like some Bikes do) I just give it the heave ho and open a new one. I do however try to keep a deck in good condition for as long as possible. I like a good, worn deck, as long as it doesn't look like you bought it at a yard sale for 10 cents. Any dropped cards and I am careful to wipe them off before returning them to the deck. One card can contaminate many. I do however feel that when performing, a clean, sharp looking deck is ideal (as long as you've broken it in and primed it). I always make sure my hands are clean and especially free of oils before I touch my cards (even that one potato chip can do damage). I just let the retired cards pile up in the card cemetary, stacked up as high as they can go. Can't seem to ever just throw them out. My last suggestion, buy in bulk. It's cheaper and much nicer to always have a fresh deck at hand. It also doesn't hurt to buy cheap ones for practicing in places you know the cards will get trashed, such as in the rain, in saunas, and while driving a car on rainy days (when you drop 'em they get a mixture of sand and mud on them). And last but not least, NEVER let kids touch your cards, you might as well just give them to them, they are most certainly doomed.

Cards that feel 'dead' to you shld not be thrown and left as practise cards for T&R or similar effects.
if you leave them in an air con room overnight, they tend to become slightly hardened and with time, they become good to use again (not like a new deck thou). cheerios

Thanks for the info fingerjack.
Working in an air conditioned room does help a lot! |
