Hello,
I want to start in the world of busking. Are there any videos available for purchase to give me the knowledge to start this kind of work? I also heard that people use a hat for the tips. Is it ok to use a coffee can and then place the lid on and cut a slit on the lid? Thank you for reading, Big k |

Cellini has a great video set to pick up. The Art of Street Magic. He is the king of true street magic and presents a lot of great tips.
Also, check out Gazzo and his book, The Art of Krowd Keeping. I saw him lecture last night and it was a treat. Lots of great effects and very funny guy. Also very nice. Both of these people are considered the top street performers in the world. The Art of Magic brings up a lot of similar points to Cellini, but is a great read and book and highly recommended. It will cover a lot of what you need to know for street magic. I would not leave the lid on the coffee cup for a few reasons. It is much harder to put the money in. Plus, it is better for people to see money in the hat. This way they think... if other people are giving him lots of money, I should too. Hope this helps. Peace! |

I agree with “et” the Cellini & Gazzo stuff is great. GET ALL OF IT YOU CAN. But remember: You have found the forum right here with a world of information. There are many great buskers on this forum that are willing to share the info. Whit Haydn is a real PRO that always seems willing to help the new comers. Check out some of his stuff at http://www.SchoolforScoundrels.com Or http://www.WhitHaydn.com Do a search for posts by Danny Hustle. He has supplied us with some great posts on getting started. He has the experience and shares the knowledge with us. You can also check out his BUSKING forum at: http://thedannyhustleshow.com/forums Frank Starsini is a member that has also added a great deal on this subject. Frank also has some great products you can find at http://www.theambitiouscard.com/ P.S. When you visit Danny’s site be sure and check out the Hawking Slum forum you will get an entire education in the art of “PITCHING” and so much more from the Master Mark Lewis.

You could always put out a cup that says "tips", but if your serious about busking then you should seriously come up with a hat line. Many years ago I was told that if I want to make money on the street I would have to do balloon animals or paint faces or something like that.
Well, I held out and never did any of those things ... and I make great money on the streets. I do this by making the hat line a part of my show, it becomes the entertainment. People want to put money in my hat. I can recommend http://performers.net - they have a library of essays from some great buskers and a message board as well, a few magicians are there as well as jugglers and dancers and what not. I also suggest that you read through all of the topics already posted here. Then also use the search function to fine tune your information quest. All that you want to know, is pretty much here somewhere.
Search for Cellini, Art of Street Performing, Gazzo, and other specifics. Just look for it first. And then ask, if you have specific situations that need additional information about. BroDavid

My way of doing it is:
Compose Create a funny act and rehearse it until you hate it. Try Test it on the street. I really mean test it on the street. Not probably someday, test it on the street. Just get out there and do it. (Toughest part.) Reflect Think of what you did, what to do better. Tricks that worked, tricks that didn't. Write up all the funny lines you made. Which lines didn't work. Write it all down. As a friend of mine always says: "I write therefore I think." Recompose Change the act, practice until you're sick and tired. Try again Use the new lines. Change them, do the tricks in a new way. The great thing is that you get to do the same trick in front of an audience a lot of times in just some hours. Go back to the Reflect-stage. Hope that helps, a bit at least. /Ark

Don't do what I did, think about it, imagine what it's like to do it, dream about it, pretend you could do it, read about it, study about it, and sit at home for two years before getting the bottle to do it.
Just get out there... and that ain't easy. |

You don't have to use an actual hat to collect the tip. You can use a coffe can if you would like, but if you are going to do a show which incompases drawing an edge, performing a show, collecting the money, and then turing the crowd, then you wouldn't want to leave the lid on the can. You want the audience to be able to easily put their money in your can or hat and then move on. If you want to just do a couple of tricks for people as they walk by then a can with a lit in the lid might work, but I would suggest that you use a clear container so that the audience can see that others have given money. Their was a post a while back that discussed the containers that people used to collect the money and quite a few didn't use a hat. The hat is probably because you will most likely already have it with you, and if you do Gazzo's cups and balls routine, or something else with a hat load the hat will have played an important role in your show so their might be some interest in it.

Don't cut a slit in the lid. Have the top open. The slit will slow down the bottling process...you need to make it easy for them. An open top coffee can will do nicely.

That was a great post by Arkadia. Get out there and do it is the only way to really make it work. Also know that you will most likely fail or at least not do very well the first time you go out. This is also to be expected. You will learn through repetition. Just keep doing it.

I use a big red bucket for my tip receptacle. Ace Hardware has 'em for <$5.00. It is highly visible.

Someone is selling a book "David Groves Be A Street Magician" on E-BAY.
Has anybody read this book and does anybody know if this would be a good book for a beginner? kOnO

Greetings and Salutations,
I was about to jump in with an "emergency" warning! Thanks for the morning eye-opener kono. Yes, I do think it's worth the $.02 (USD) opening bid price, and the guy selling it should be charged with robbery if he takes a penny more for it! FDROFLMAO! For the uninitiated, stay away from this book in droves. It's mostly (%@&, but very well-written (%@&! Just my $.02 (USD) worth (which is what the book is worth, and I should know, I own a copy) YMMV! Joe in KC |

I’ve have heard that the spelling and grammar is very good, but does $.02 seem a bit steep?

I gave my copy to Business. I would have felt like a filthy grafter if I would have charged $.02 for it.

Busking. I love it more than anything else. Close-up work is dull in comparison. I have made my living on the street for over 20 yrs now. OK I make cups now and do a bit of close up, but the street is still 80% of my income. Those cups may seem costly but you get a lot of waste and scrap.
The reason I gave up magic-pitch was to do more street. That's my advice---do it as often as you can. Lines, style, skill and character all come as a result of time performing. I studied magic on the street as I went. I see no point in sitting indoors practicing. OK, I do that now, but I'm 45 with a new-born first child and no life. I couldn't do a double lift when I did my first magic street show. So if you're young, leave home and follow the sun. Busk your way around the world. It's the best life you'll ever get. I had a ball everywhere (except France). If I sound like I miss the life on the road that's because I do. So you young fools throw your bloody computer away and sod off with your show kit---now. |

It's a harsh world out there, be ready and go for it with all youve got. That's my suggestion to you. Only prepare yourself for some really tight situations, and I wish you all the best of luck.
