Hi all
This is a question to everybody , and I think most of you has wondered before, how do people build up there magic over the time. In other words, how did you learn your magic, have you been taught one to one, books, videos, watching a magician and working it out how it was done, spending lots of money buying gimmicks or all of them. Well all of them, might be the classic answer, but which one in you opinion is the most effective way of learing an effect , practice comes after the learning obviously . I am fairly new to magic. All comments are appreciated . thanks in advance ;-)

Magic comes from imagination & dreams, people want to make impossible to possible, unbelievable to believable.
Why? I would say entertainment rather than fooling lay people. So how did they got ideas? Well, it begins from imagination and dreams... For example like "What if I could change a face of a card to another, isn't that very impressive?". Then comes of solving the problem of exchanging the card without having spectator notice the flash. "What if I could", "How about", "Why not" They found a solution and performing already, but yet, they want to improving it to be more interesting, "What if I i changethe cards infront of the spectator eyes!"... slowly by hiding here, misdirection there. A brand new method is created/improved. And it goes on and on and on. . . this is how magic get developed along the time. :)

I learned originally from reading books. A decade later I met a great group of people at the Chicago Round Table and developed mentors who could help with any problems or sleights. It's a good combination. I had the books for reference.

Hey there Zac,
I started reading books. from books, I started buying gimmicks from magic shops. That got too expensive so I started to create my own effects. because I know my own skill and my budget it seemed like a natural fit. Videos have seem to become the norm as far as learning effects is concerned as you can see a visual. Books are a much better investment. If you can find some magi in your area, I'd encourage you to session with them. It will give you awesome feedback. Pete |

Books got me started technically.
Watching magicians perform helped me with timing and the real work that's needed in magic performances. I'm still developing. |

Books. Books are key. When reading about an effect or sleight, you can then alter it to suit your own handling.
Watching someone else on a DVD, you are far more tempted to just do it exactly as they do it when you are first learning. A good book usually gives various ways of acheiving an effect. A DVD simply gives you one performers prefered way of doing it. I prefer the freedom of a book. Once you get moving down the magical path, there is less danger of simply cloning someone else's moves. |

I started mine with books..RRTCM lol..then more books
and when dvds became common..from dvds... but I agree that with dvds, you tend to follow someone's style and not become original so its still best to start with books I think cheerios

I to have started with books and DVD's, and as was mentioned ne mindful not to force yourself into a direct copy of what you see, get a feel for your own handling. The more relaxed and an natural you carry out an action the better it will look to the spectator, I think (my own opinion only) that the natural flowing movements are the key to carrying off a move or sleight, a bit like a duck in a pond, not a lot happening on the surface but paddling like hell underneath.

I was first taught by a friend. After that, I lost interest.
Then I scoured the internet for free tricks (very bad idea). My father gave me 2 dvd's of magic and that's when I really got hooked up in it. I do magic as a hobby and it's been great doing it for many years.

Used to have sessions with Jimmy "Cards" Molinari, "The Amazing Randy" Wakeman and, what was that other guys name Jimmy?, oh yeah!, John Wiet at the local Pizza Hut. John was there more for the entertainment and pizza though. Those were hours well spent.
Cheers!

Books mainly as a primer and I have one or two videos.
But really the key is developing the basics of what you learn to your own style and body. For example the material on the coin roll out flourish doesn't describe the minute details in positioning the coins and the amount you need to move your fingers. It can't, because everyone's fingers are different and you must take the basics and alter them to suit your physiology. The same goes for routining or patter. You need to take ideas and mould them to your style. Repeating somebody elses magic is not only boring, it most likely won't suit you. |

I became interested in Magic while in Las Vegas and I bought a magic trick there. Then when I came home I started to buy videos. I learn by watching others perform. I have lots and lots of videos. I also took a magic class, joined the international brotherhood of magicians, and started to do magic shows for free. I performed for relatives birthday parties, family get-togethers, cub scouts, and homes for abused children. I found that my nitch is in comedy magic. I am able to make kids laugh, and I use slapstick, funny props, puppets, a few home-made magic tricks, and crazy words. Instead of abracadabra as a magic word.... I constantly make up silly magic words. I now have my wife who acts as my apprentice. I change the show according to age and if it's for boys or girls. My magic is evolving and I try to update and make each performance better than the last. Most of all it is lots of fun for me, my wife, and our audience.

I started off with books and gradually moved to dvds when it became more easily available.
I still think that books are one of the best methods to master magic as it forces you to think of a proper presentation and style that suits yourself. With dvds, we tend to practise and say the words we learn from the disc. We might end up losing our own style of presentation and become mere repricals of others cheerios

I started with books and had some great people help me along the way. I do see a need for DVDs and such , which when I started was not around. I can see where that DVDs could help with sleights a great bit. I develop my magic as time went along,
but with that I also develop my acting ,timing ,and my image on stage . I watch and learn from some of the greatest macgicians that are now gone. Find your thing, be it what ever it is in magic ,then work on that with every means that is avalable to you. And have fun always. Alson |

I have been collecting videos (for sleights/effects), books (for theory), and magical friends (for feedback). That combination has worked well for me.

Deffinatly books. I also have gotten into purchasing dvd's and Videos for Idea's for things, and getting to see things preformed in real time. My best source though is my mentor. When every I need help with something or advice with something with magic he can always help me and he makes very good suggestions.

I developed my magic by several ways...
Practising, reading, watching videos, Listening, and of course, sharing ideas and thoughts with other magicians. The café can be a great help on this last one. Start by reading Darwin Ortiz's Strong magic, you'll learn how to be a powerfull performer |

Theres nothing like breathing , eating , and sleeping magic with the pros. Tha books and videos of course helped and so did this great Café. Being out there with "THE BIG BOYS" and keeping an open mind with some new dynamic kids. Break the walls of indifference and you will meet more teachers in this journey, young , old , new and seasoned.
Peace, Rannie
