I like opening with my special sponge ball routine. It's fun, flashy, gets there attention.
I would never open with a D'Lite doing close up. It's not meant for close up at all.

i have no problem opening with cards although it is usually better not to. I think the Chicago Opener is a good opener because it's like an impossible event to happen.
I've always thought that people have had a misunderstanding of what kind of card effects should be openers. of course a revelation or something like Reset wouldn't be a good opener. A card trick like the Chicago Opener has always been an impossible thing to happen to the spectators which is why I feel it is a better opener when using cards than to do a "quicky" of a card trick to open with. I, though, usually open with Troy Hooser's charming chinese challenge. People usually don't think of them of coins but more of foreign objects penetrating a ribbon. Whereas if I were to open with a copper silver transpo, they are more likley to think of them as coins since they've seen steel and copper coins before. |

My favorite opener, which is also the one I use, is my effect actually. It is aproduction of four coins from the spectators' shoulders, slevves, etc. and mine too. It is a great way to catch them by surprise and let them know that, "You're good!"

True, Andrew, i occasionally do a coin appearance and have it vanish to places etc. It really does send them the message that "this guy is good."

I usually start by asking the spectator when the last time they've seen a $2 bill, and doing the $2 bill tear. It's amazing how many people believe this is real magic. Most people get excited when you pull out your wallet and start reaching for money. The $2 bill is unique and always seems to get people's attention.

I open with the old Roy Benson effect where you come on with two silks in one hand. Let a spec pick either color.
Do Magicians Choice, and vanish the silk I wasn't going to use in the followup trick, by stuffing the silk that I want to get rid of into a clear glass, and use the other silk as a "stopper". The silk literally, instantly, and visually vanishes before their eyes from a plain water glass. Then I go into sucker egg trick (vanish other silk, reveal egg, get "caught", and finally break egg into glass. You have to do the Roy Benson thing as an opener because of the setup. I like this as an opener because it is flashy, "magical", and colorful. It sets the mood for the rest of the act.
"Pick any card. NOT that one!!!"

Vanishing lit cigarette. It's quick and visibly strong. Now you have their attention.
It's amazing how the simplest tricks can get the strongest reactions.
