Andrew Gerard Review
Last night, my wife Natalie and I went to see Andrew Gerard in his two hour show Mind Games … without a doubt one of the best nights of entertainment we have enjoyed in a very long time. For a Tuesday night, the Burnaby Shark Club in Vancouver was packed with people trying to get in to see Andrew. He has a large following in British Columbia with his many TV and radio appearances. It was so busy that they were turning people away at the door, now that’s a draw card! The first half of the show, a show within itself, was all mentalism. Andrews unique, relaxed but very entertaining style takes what most people think of as a lowe key of entertainment to a very fresh and new level. There were no corny jokes, no ‘magic’ type mental tricks, just psychological illusions of the mind. The pace of the show moved well from beginning to end with a climax that made the crowd ‘believe’ in their own powers of the mind. While never claiming to have true powers, I’m sure Andrew left many an audience member wondering, was it real? From bending large nails to four drawing duplications, to PK touches and a very impressive routine with $200 on the line where Andrew was able to psychologically tell which hand a chess piece was in this show was drawing the oohs and ahhs from the large crowd. There were times where you could hear a pin drop and times where the laughter was gut renching. It was funny watching the local magicians in the corner huddling together wondering how he did most of his material and I heard many asking if these effects were on sale. What they didn't know was that the majority of his show is all original ideas that he has been developing over many years of working his act. The second half of the show was all hypnotism and the crowd absolutely loved this. The subjects were some of the best I’ve ever seen. The way Andrew commands the stage was truly masterful, and the speed in which he hypnotises his subjects was within minutes. I managed to bring my video camera along and captured some unbelievable moments with the audience. There were people laughing so hard they were crying, I even captured one lady laughing so hard she had to dash to the bathroom! Watching the faces of people around was part of the fun as well as watching those people on stage. There was a diverse age group attending the show from early twenties to late seventies and Andrew appealed to them all. He proved that there is no need to swear or be rude or do ‘bad’ taste routines, everything was clean and incredibly clever and funny, something the audience certainly appreciated. As a result of last night’s performance I was told that the Shark Club will now be putting Andrew’s Show there every two months, and not for just one night, but TWO! This is to accomondate all the people that want to see him. If you get the chance to see Andrew work then you should do yourself a favor and see why he really is considered one of the best in the business in this part of the world. Paul Romhany
