I have found that banks are the best source. Even found Ike Dollars last week at the bank in the grocery. Keep trying. I was able to get a full roll a few weeks back and it had 3 silver kennedys in it. Usually they will have a few loose coins.

Lasalle banks usually have them. Citibanks around me rarely have them.

Hey I understand you want to get half dollars....although they are the practical and cheapest way to go....you should go to a coin shop and invest in a set of silver halves...kennedy, franklin, walking liberty, even barbers.....they all have well made gaffs by johnson..and they wont talk as much as the standard half dollar....you can find silver coins slicked out...meaning a little old or even uncirculated ones if the edges make a difference for you....I myself have bought a walking liberties at antique or coin shop for about 2 dollars each...and its is well worth it.

I was thinking about getting walking liberty halves, but I'm worried that people will not as familiar with them as regular halves.

I like to use Franklins and most aren't familier with them either. If your worried about that I would say egt some silver kennedys. I like silver as it is a nicer looking coin..and it seems to be a bit tacky or easier to grip in various palm positions. You can get kennedy halves inexpensively still.

Sometimes you can get amazing deals on eBay for silver halves for very close to face value. You just need to be patient and scan the auctions regularly.

I went to the Bank of America branch in Newport Beach, CA and they had hundreds of dollars in halves.
I suspect that a large bank in a large city near you would, as well. I'd phone first, though. |

I'll check large banks and ebay. Thanks everyone.
Ben Are the silver halves shinier? |

Absolutely shinier -- and they sound a lot better too -- it is worth the investment in these utility props that will last you years.

If you only want to get them for their face value of 50 cents, then I'd say the bank is your best chance. Rarely, but certainly on occasion, banks do have them, and they will only cost you 50 cents there for sure. I always ask anytime I go to the bank, and I've gotten a few myself that way. If you're lucky enough to have a friend who will trade them for equivalent change, then you have another option. The only other places that would have them are coin shops and, of course, since they are in business for profit, they always want more than 50 cents. So, getting them for 50 cents, I suppose, all depends on whether or not you have more than 50 cents worth of patience, whatever that may be. It may also depend as much on the value of waiting vs. the value of need.
Hopefully Helpful, Dr. Faust

I have occassionally found that when the audience doesn't recogonize the coins they assume that they are magical or gimmicked...some are just impressed of how old and genuine the coins are and focus more on the coins....rather than the burning your hands...it helps take a lot of heat of at the needed time.

That's a good tip to have the audience interested in the coins and not trying to figure the magic out.

For people who are knowledgable about coins:
I believe 1964 was the only year Kennedy halves were made of silver. 1) Are ALL 1964 Kennedy halves silver? 2) Are all previous halves made of silver (all Walking Liberties for example)? 3) What are halves made of today? |

1) 90 percent silver
2) Yes 3) yes, all were silver till the went to copper clad 4) The last ones I saw were copper / nickle clad
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I know this is not a direct response to the initial post, but I must agree with something said earlier. It's surely a great idea to have the audience more interested in the uniqueness or oddness of the coins being used. It's always great misdirection! I can actually see the spectators looking at the coins more than the sleights I am working elsewhere. My favorite is a set of Walking Liberty Coins, including an e@$%@*&^ s$%#*, a flipper, and one ungaffed coin, creating the appearance of four--all ultimately vanished, of course. Likewise, I can see how a really shiny set of even the most ordinary coins can be the gimmick that ultimately misdirects your spectators eyes. So, maybe shiny is the way the go!

Half dollars are availabkle at the federal reserve banks and can be ordered by any bank if you get a few rolls at a time. Convince your "friendly" banker to order some for you.
