Salutations!
It's wonderful to find an sideshow forum. I am an actor/performer in the DC Metro area. I'm a fire eater and contortionist and I'm currently working on contact juggling as my latest fascination. I will be ditching the one woman title, and working at a sideshow at the Florida state fair this month, so if anyone is in that area, I would love to expand my network of interesting and talented people. Anyone going to be around? |

Where will you be performing? I heard there is going to be a sideshow there this year. I thought it was Dermer's but have since heard otherwise. Who's is it? Anyone?

Ward Hall has sold the World of Wonders to a showman on the West Coast. No, it's not THAT showman on the west coast. Chris Christ is booking it and Ward will be talking the front of the show in Tampa and possibly on some other dates. There was an ad looking for acts at Sideshow Central.

Howdy Trinket, Trust me you will definatly like contact juggling.
I kind of wish thought hat I could go on tour with Ward though. (I don't think that I'm that good, let alone good with people) |

Wow, Todd, not only are you well informed, but you are quick. Yes, I will be performing under Ward Hall and Chris Christ. I'm going to have some insanely busy days, but I would love to play "Network" with anyone who stops by. It's a fun game! Swing by Tampa if you get a day to drive down and play, Will. Facade, I totally understand the whole not good with people. I got into this career, cause I'm good at faking normalicy. I consider it my best trick to convince muggles that I live a fascinating life of extreme popularity, when really I am just a wierd chick who has a lot of practice time and no social life what-so-ever. Thank you for such a warm welcome everyone!

I'll be there if your performances fall on the right day. We'll be doing Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando on the 12th. Do you perform on the 13th? I'll bring Will with me if he wants a ride.

I'll be in Tampa! I don't know what my daily schedule is, but I'll be working from the 10th through the 21st. I can't guarentee that I'll have much time to hang out, but the fair has so much to offer, so its not like you'll be bored. That would be awsome! If you can make it, see you guys then.

Working a real show on a fair date is an experience not to be missed. The hours are long, the working conditions are not the best and often the audience just doesn't care. It's also the greatest time of your life. It will either make you a better performer or it will kill you! You will learn how to pace yourself. You will probably be working at least eight continuous hours a day. That's a lot of performing. If one show sucks, don't feel bad, because there's another one coming up in a few minutes. If a show goes great, don't get a swelled head, because there another show starting in a few minutes. Eat well, drink LOTS of water and get all the rest you can. You will have the time of your life and a ton of stories when it's all over. This may be your last chance to work a REAL sideshow, so enjoy. Just make sure you get the keys to the midway before you begin.

Thank you so much Todd! I'm so excited about this gig! It'll be an endurance test for sure. Question: I want to take my torches with me for fire eating. I will not be needing them for the show, but I want to get some advice from some of the other pyros that are down there. It's nice to practice around experienced people for tips and such. The problem is TSA will rape me if they think I've got torches in my luggage. As they are home made, I can break them down and throw away the wicking and take fresh kevlar that has never been exposed to fuel. Anybody have to deal with airport security when taking props?

The torches should be ok, as long as the wicks are dry, and they're in your checked luggage. The security folks might want to look, but it should be no huge deal. If they feel threatened enough to ask questions, just tell them what's up. It's always a good idea to have a piece of PR along, in order to validate yourself. Get your fluids there.

My father is a hobby magician. I grew up watching him perform for family gatherings, birthday parties, corperate events, etc. I learned at an early age that I freaked people out. I've always been very bendy and did lots of "wierd body tricks". I also inherrited a good dose of macabre in my humor gene pool. I didn't get into the "freak" part until the past few years when I began working with M.eX. Productions as an assistant, stooge and artistic consultant. That company is run by Michael Taggert and Trey Cromwell. From that group I still work with Michael occationally (He taught me to eat fire) and Trey moved to California last spring (he started me into contortion and contact juggling). They are two amazing people and I'm proud to have worked with them. I'm now branching out and working solo. A lady in this buisness is a rare thing and I love doing the unexpected. Especially when those expectations are based on such things as gender, race, etc.
I almost forgot... My biggest inspiration has been Charon Henning, sword swallower. She has been most instrumental in attracting me to the sideshow biz. I'm so excited to be working with her in Tampa. I really hope some of you can make it out to see her perform, as she is an amazing woman, whom I greatly admire. And one more person, I absolutly must give credit to is Stephon Walker AKA Swami Yomahmi. Stephon is a wonderful performer and I must say I'm a huge fan of his show. I've seen him perform at Maryland Renaissance Faire countless times and I loved being in the audience every time. He got me into Motion Fest East this past year (one of the best experiences of my entire life) and has sent me several announcements for work posted including this sideshow gig in Tampa. |

Well...if your 'look' is that of your Avatar...you're already successful!
One of Todd's secrets that he won't admit to or even allow to be mentioned (sorry Todd) is that he's handsome and..uh...so normal guy looking...that when he does the things he does, his 'look' adds greatly to the act. Why he could be just a stand up comic coming on stage...no give away Spikes or tatoos on his face, just your local Men's Wharehouse Manager (note the 'a' in that 2nd word please). Not that there's anything wrong with spikes I guess but being able to move amongst all circles is a key to extra surprise when you turn out 'different'. Anyway...we are all enchanted with your Avatar photo...and I'm sure your audience is bowled over as well! Doug

Why thank you, I am blushing, that is one of my most favorite pics of me. . . Since I'm also an actor I try to keep myself as versitile as possible. I am a chamelion and often am not recognized after I take off my costume and stage character. I adapt to my surroundings. I think it's more fun that way, cause it suprises the audience so much more. I completely blindside them when I stick a torch in my mouth or untwist my arms out of a knot.

Will, Sherri and I should be there on Sunday, the 13th, as soon as we shake off Mardi Gras. Flame On!

I fly five flights a week and often with fire eating torches and juggling torches. I keep them in a a leather pouch that is drawn by a string inside a big plastic travel case. The torches are always dry.
You can't transport fuel of course so you must pick it up on the way to the venue. TSA confiscated from my bag an empty and dry Ronsonol bottle I use to apply the fuel. I had even wrapped white gaff tape and written "empty" on it. Then, six months later, I recieved a letter in the mail advising me to not travel with flamable liquids on a plane. Six months later! That was worth the 37 cents and time from government employees. Just got back inland. I am coming to Tampa on Sunday, hell or high water. Not in the mood for spell check, Will Trinket, I made it by the show but of course you where busy in the grind. I enjoyed the show and was impressed with how new and bright everything was. From the tent, art, props, costumes. Folks it was done to the nines. My roommate went to motionfest. Just dawned on me you said you attended. Randy Cabral is his name. A very tallented juggler/comic. I just wanted to say thank you for posting about the show and I had a great time checking out the show. Considering I have shell shock from fairs and it takes a great deal to get me to attend one you did it. After working state fairs for five years my eye twitches upon entering the gates. I wasn't winking at you. Will

You know, it's funny.
I thought I saw you out in the audience. Performers just watch a show differently. I came out to talk to you, and you were already gone. Darnit. I'm so sad we didn't get a chance to connect. I'm glad you enjoyed the fair. Thank you for braving the Hell that is the Midway. I don't go out there if I can help it. Believe it or not, I get social anxiety when I'm out there. I don't like being harassed by the game and ride guys, but inside the tent is friendly. My co-workers are all wonderful people. Perhaps we shall meet for real sometime. Thank you again for supporting our show! |

Sherri and I were there too! We liked the Lady headded snake with the flicking tounge. I've never seen a Sideshow before. Will enlightened us.
Thanks Dave

My counselor, okay, state appointed therapist says I am an outgoing introvert. I can't stand a crowd but put me on a stage and I'm another person.
The mid way is where my eye twitches the most. I'm good at finding the back roads where the farmers drive. Might be out of the way but no traffic and no noise. There is an art to navigating a fair, theme park and cruise ship. I have mastered all three. Is the show still on the road or was that a one stand? Will

My time is finally up. I am going home tomorrow to sleep and do laundry. They are currently working on a traveling schedule. I haven't signed for the traveling show. I already have a few bookings elsewhere that I need to honor first, so we'll see. I hope to make it down to Florida again. . . soon. It's going to be a shock to go back to Maryland weather tomorrow. I understand about that crowd movement ability. I may be small, but you put on the right attitude and suddenly everyone parts before you. . . but then again who wants to go around drooling and talking to themselves all the time.
