Hi all,
I'm new here, so forgive me if I'm asking a question that has already been asked. I'm looking for plans to build my own sub trunk. I know that Paul Osborne has plans in his "Classic Illusions 1", but I'm a little weary of buying the whole book sight unseen for that one illusion. Has anyone seen the plans from that book, or does anyone have suggestions on some good plans? - Robb |

Robb,
Almost all Osborne plans are available singly. They can be purchased from most dealers or directly from Osborne Illusion Systems. There are also several other books available that show the trunk. At least one museum curator has said that is where she learned the workings! That being said, it is hard to go wrong with purchasing most Osborne books. If you get past the fact tht you have to be very leery of following the sizes too closely you can find a lot of good ideas to (ahem) build on.

Hey all,
Here's a link to review I wrote of the book: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......10&1 If you have any questions please let me know. Magically yours, Matt Kielbiski |

Thanks for the advice. I've received several recommendations both here and in private messages, so I'm probably going to end up buying the book as opposed to the single plan.
Does anyone know if the sub trunk in the book one of the "keyed" variety? Does anyone have advice on what versions seem to work best? I'm looking to perform at least once in the round, and I'd prefer to have the box examined. I'm partial to the packing crate versus steamer trunk as far as looks are concerned, but not if the cosmetics limit the performance. - Robb |

If your just starting up in illusion they are good books to have and you could probably get a cheap second hand sub trunk and save yourself the hassle of building it, unless that is your aim of course.

There's an ebook on building a packing crate/sub trunk illusion by Matt and David Garner available for $7 from lybrary.com ( http://www.lybrary.com/books/Packing_Crate_Escape.html ). It's nicely clear, covers all the parts and stages needed and is illustrated with photos every step of the way. Though I haven't made any attempt yet to build the illusion as described I reckon I can recommend it for the asking price.
Of course, it doesn't hurt to get more than one set of plans (ie differing perspectives) for any illusion; research as many different versions as possible, along with the history of how those methods were arrived at in the first place and you've a much better chance of coming up with the illusion and method that's perfect for you. |

Thanks again! I downloaded a copy of the plans from Lybrary and bought a copy of the Tarbell course while I was there (I have the books but the CD comes with a search engine). I still plan on buying the Osborne book but for $7 it was hard to pass up.
Thanks to all who posted on the topic. I must say, I'm overly impressed with how friendly the people are here. |
