Michael:
Great informatiuon and I will have to look into that. I usually use the duct tape a lot for my festival gigs. I never know the exact staging area I will be performing on and I insist on always using my own sound system equipment for every show I do. Perhaps this new product you mention may even work better. Thanks for the ideas. Kyle

I use theatrical "Spike" tape. It is dayglow in color. The 1/2 inch is perfect for kids paties as it is made to hold tight on a carpet.
Using masking tape releases and the kids start pulling it up. Duct tape is bad because several cheap brands leave a residue. Spike tape is designed to mark the actors blocking on stage. Beware however on its use on freshly sealed hardwood floors. I have seen it lift off the finish on a floor that hasn't "cured" for at least a year. Here are some examples: http://www.thetapeworks.com/spike.htm

Glod:
Thanks for the link. I have used this on occassion and it does work out rather well. I use this for my stage shows to mark positions of my props and illusions prior to the first festival shows that day. It makes it much easier to set up no matter how little time they may give me between sets. I still carry the duct tape though for any other emergencies that come along. I like to always be prepared. I love the idea of the duct tape wallet.
That could go with the running gag of my mini wallet and card to wallet. Have you ever tried card or anything else,(hankerchief ) to duct tape wallet? Harris

I could never do this in one of my shows cause I don't carry any kind of tape in my kit. I've never found it necessary to do things like putting a line down or having to explain the rules of behaviour before a show. |

If it doesn't move and it's supposed to, use WD-40.
If it does move and it's not supposed to, use DUCT tape! |

Thanks for the info on the flat duct tape. I may look into this as it would save up space in my tool and festival emergency kit. Anytime I can save space, I try to. I am always looking for ways to consolidate and condense my show better. Thanks again for the suggestion. Truthteller: This guy actually did this to a kid who was not a stoog? I just can not believe what some so-called magicians do and how they treat their audiences. That is just flat out wrong. Is this guy still working? Regardless of how rude the kid is, you must lways remember that you are an adult, you are a professional and you should know better then to stoop to that level. As a professional you learn to deal with it, but that is NOT the answer. Kyle

I was going to jump in with a joke about using it to tie up a misbehaving kid, but now that we have someone who really did it, there's goes the funny part. I wonder what was going through the kid's mind as he/she began to relize he/she was really tied up. Did the kid think it was funny or was there a scared look on the kid's face. How bad was the kid to provoke what could honestly be called an assault. I just can't picture doing that to someone other than a stooge.

I've used duct tape to make up a couple of spare "bats" (PK type)... I keep one in the car and one at the office. No fuss, no muss!

I hope the story of duct taping the child to the seat is really just a joke. The family would have the right to press charges on this. Kyle is absolutely correct -we are the professionals; we took on this profession for our love of magic and our desire to entertain children. There are many more positive ways to affect desired behaviors. I would strongly recommend everyone take an education course on Classroom Management if they need any assistance in this area.
Just my two cents but in my FT job I'm a Mandated Reporter for any allegations of abuse in NY state so the idea of duct tape for discipline simpy irks me. Peace to all, Vinny |

Vinny:
Amen to that. I am just amazed at what I have seen some magicians say and do to kids when performing. No, you are not always going to have the perfect show, but you should be a professional about how you handle it. Kyle

Thanks Kyle!
I forgot to add that for those interested there are also some good books on effective discipline available, os ask a pre-school/nursery teacher for some advice. Peace to all, Vinny |
