It's not the CUP, it's the BALL.!! If you are using the crocheted ball, just push the little bar magnet out and, using wire cutters or some such tool, shorten the magnet slightly. This will make it easier for you to dislodge the ball when setting down the cup.

I'd make the investment in an RNT II cup. You won't be disappointed.

Carlos, here is a picture of the three kinds of cups that I make right now. The one on the lower left is called 'White Magic'. It's white with a white lining. The bottom right is 'Black Magic'. It has a red lining. The one on top is the one that everyone is talking about. It's 'Desert Rose' and has a brown lining.
The White and Black Magic cups are brand new. This is the first time that anybody has seen them. Randwill, it's neither the cup nor the ball. It's the manipulation of the cup. Oh, I just discovered something - I supply 3/4" balls with my cups but I bought a pair of 1" balls just because I saw them and kind of liked them. I discovered that if I hold my hand a little cupped when I put the cup over the ball, then just straighten out the hand, the ball engages! Talk about looking magical! The movement is so subtle it is simply invisible! The spectator sees the cup go over the ball and then the ball is simply not there. The only drawback is that both balls won't go into the cup at one time. So I modified my routine a little so that I never try that. There is still very little chance of flashing so that's not an issue. Click here to view attached image. |

Oh yeah, I found this really cute 'diamond dust' glitter. I sprinkle that over the white and black magic cups with the first coat of varnish. Then nine coats over that to hold the glitter in.
...and no, varnish is NOT over the top! We are magicians and allowed to have tacky things like stars and crescent moons and yes, GLITTER. |

Never had the problembut appreciate the info on tilting the cup to dislodge,i don't try to set it down and have the ball dislodge, I tap the cup to make th eball reappear and that has alwasy worked for me,by the way I may have said this before, after halloween several years ago I saw some rubber balls of the correct size for a final load , painted as eye balls, I paid a dollar for 2 of them ,now my routine is about keeping your eye on the cup as I put the small ball in my poocket, show the eye ball, then say this is so cool you have to keep both eyes on the cup, lift cup to reveal the second ball, just my 2 cents

Having done Cups & Balls and the Chop Cup for my entire magical life (45 years) and for a living for the past 30+ year, I agree wholeheartedly with denny_Corby. Magicians think and woman claim size doesn't matter. Don't believe it for a minute, at least as far as magic goes. It's one of the few points I always disagreed with Ken Brooke on (and proved it to him one time in his place in London.) Produce four billiard balls between your fingers and you'll get a nice round of applause. Produce a bowling ball from anywhere and you'll get a gasp.

I think there was an error on Hocus-Pocus.com

I don't use the normal sized chop cup at all any more except with my combo set. I use 1" balls and the final load is 1.5". However, the balls are red, white, and blue and the final load is an eyeball. During my routine I 'explain' the routine, "You have to keep your eye on the ball and hand. I keep TELLING you about the ball, but that's to through you off, see? You looked at the cup and the ball vanished from my hand." Then later I tell them, "...I know I told you to watch the cup and hand, but really, you have to keep your eye on the BALL." That's when I produce an eyeball. The tie-in with the patter, all the discussion of cups, hands, and balls, catches them totally by surprise. I always, ALWAYS get a good reaction and sometimes gasps out of that final load. If you want to see it in action go to texaustin.com and click on "Demo Clips". You'll see that I get a great reaction on a small final load. It's not the apparatus, Denny, it's the magician. If you sell a garden pea as magical people will gasp. |

I reckon I'd have to agree with Tex on this one. I noticed some rubber bouncing glow in the dark eyeballs at a kids store once and purchased them for final loads in cups and balls. Developed a story about how you always have to keep your eye on the ball with the eyeballs rolling out at the end and got a strong reaction. Size, I think, is just one of the ways to achieve the surprise affect. BTW, I, too, was having a problem with the ball dislodging on occasion, even with the technique of catching an edge first. Seems that sometimes the ball would attach in a "strong fashion" and require hurculean effort (at least in the performance) to get it free. I like the idea of altering the ball to make it a bit more sensitive.

I have the Riser Platform size Chop cup, that looks like a cocktail shaker. It will hold a baseball lodged in the top, so after all the chop effects you can do some sleight of hand sequences with the final load in place. This gives great time misdirection.
The dislodge of magnet ball works like a champ. Does anybody have any tips on producing a load that is obviousely to large for the cup to finish? Like a softball or grapefruit. And how do you go about it? I would appreciate a pm if it would be inappropriate to mention it here. Arthur Atsma |

Just got some RNT II chop balls, yesterday. They should make any chop cup handle the way you want it to - they're fully adjustable.

G'day all,
After starting to sew my own Mini baseballs I created my first magnetic chop cup ball and here is what I discovered and may help out. after sewing the ball up and trying it in my RNT II chop cup I found I had to strike the cup with a great deal of pressure and as people are say needing to use the angle dislogement. I then tried it in a chop dice cup which I had made myself that the ball desloged very easy with perfection. I then thought to myself how could that be so I took a magnet and tried it in both cups and found the magnet in my RNT II positive side down and the home made dice chop cup was negitive side down. With the first ball I made have 2 magnets where the negitive side where facing out on the surface of the ball and the positive facing the inside of the ball. So in the RNT II cup the 2 magnets came very close and basicly touch one another so the magnetic attraction was very powerfull, now when I place the ball in my home made dice chop cup the magnet is now attracted to the positive sides of the magnet which are inside the ball and now have space between the magnet surface in the ball and the magnet surface in the cup by the the thickness of the ball so causes the magnetic atraction of the ball to the cup lesser, which in hand allows the ball to disloge with lesser force. I have tried other cups and other balls and found that other brand chop balls also use 2 magnets which created the same problem and different cups and different balls that are created have different polarities depending who makes them and then you have the balls that only have metal shims and no magnets which will also perform differently depending on the quality of magnet in the cup. You can test this theory because if you balls that have magnets in them have say the positive ends of the magnets on the outside of the ball then the magnet ends of the ball and the chop cup is negitive negitive on the bottom of the cup theh the end of the balls with the magnets will contact the bottom of the cup and if the balls have the possitive ends of the magnets on the inside of the ball then the ball will contact the the bottom of the cup on the sides of the ball without the magnets. This is what I have discovered from my experimentation and I hope it comes in handy Michael |
