...The day Job! As winter here comes to an end, the hotel where I work is getting ready to open again. The day job, huh! how I would love to pack it in, mine is the worst...Dishwasher!! just like Bruce Lee! and it's not even really a DAY job as I work in the restaurant at night! My scheme however is to one day blow my bosses brains out with a deck of cards and then...see about a promotion.
I am not a hobbyist and fully intend to perform for a living one day...some day...or maybe write a few books (for magicians of course), I'm just retaining my amataur status so I can enter the magic olympics So, anyone else dream of packing in the job and what is YOUR scheme for going "pro"?

How old are you?
This is if you are 18+ Get off your buttt and learn a trade. Then when you earn a good wage you can setup a good base to venture into the fickle world of a working magician. Learn plumbing as it is a trade in high demand, or telecoms is screaming out for network engineers to lay and terminate cable. Both these trades will yeild in excess of £600 pw minimum.

I work in Telecom by day, magic by night! The Telecom pays the bills and makes for no pressure when doing magic. I don't need an income from magic so everything I make is a bonus!
(funny, I was a plumber before I was in Telecom) |

The reason I do the job I do is BECAUSE learning a trade is just that, I only have one thing that I pour my creative energy into, magic. its not a hobby to me, its what I am, My post may have seemed like I was complaining about my job, that's not the case, I love working for the Hotel its a family and I am part of a team. It pays the bills and leaves plenty more for fun. I live with my partner and we are your basic double income no kids couple, I already have a sound financial base, its experience in magic I am trying to build. Sorry I am sure you didn't intend to hurt my feelings.kicthen porter is a dirty job but somebodys got to do it. just like plumbing. O.K This was a bad thread idea...ouch.

No offence intended, sorry if any was taken!
I still say you seem to be putting in a lot of time for little financial return. By addressing this situation you may be able to get better money or more time too play with. The Butt comment does not indicate being idle, but more a dig at peoples lack of motivation to find other types of work and instead stick with what they have.

Keep at it man.
If you're a dishwasher, show the manager some A list stuff on your break then offer to work the bar. You'll make it if you want to. |
