Hi Andrea,
A friend of mine owns and operates a balloon warehouse. He attends lectures and conventions all over the world regarding balloons and his creations make mine look so pale in comparison. He creates life size motorcycles with various cartoon characters all made of balloons.Amazing stuff! With his line of work he uses an electric pump and once quoted the price to me at around 200 dollars. This one you simply step on it and the balloon is inflated in seconds. I'm wondering if a compressor would work the same way? This same friend also created a very cool gadget for walkaround at festivals..he put the tank on his back, resembling a scuba diver, threaded the tube through his sleeves and was able to blow up balloons at his finger tips! It too was an electric pump. Perhaps do a search on electric balloon pumps on the net and see what you come up with. Good luck in your search. T-House in response to your question, I personally don't have any jokes I just say I talk too much and need a pump to blow up the balloons. Although it has crossed my mind to think of something witty to say in regards to the muscles in my arms. :O) Not from lifting weights but from blowing up balloons. Chrystal |

Concerning lines to use, Balloon HQ used to have tons of lines for pump users and mouth inflaters alike to use. I'm sure the information is still there; I found some real gems mixed among a lot of really bad one-liners and puns.
Really, anybody looking for just about any topic on twisting can go there and get the information. The site is a HUGE resource. http://www.balloonhq.com Ron |

I use a pump all the time. When asked about it or someone implies `cheat', "I simply state that I have lost my breath and can't find it" or "No, I don't do that any more. I lose to much chewing gum that way" or "My wife says my hot air is too bad on the balloons".
Why do I stay with the pump??? In this day and age, people don't want their kids handling some elses `air' or where someone else's mouth has been. That might sound dumb but it is becoming more and more the case. Back when I used my mouth to fill the balloons, I have seen people take the balloons away from their kids as they walked away. It took a little while for me to catch on.. Something to think about.. I have tried the `air tank' with regulator but didn't like it at all. I have 5 different pumps but mainly use one. It is good on 160s or 260s.
The Doctor will see you now! ;-)

I got really dizzy and almost passed out the first time I tried to blow up a 260. While blowing the balloon, it helps to 'very slightly' pull on the far end of the balloon. If you don't pull the end, or if you pull it too hard, you'll have problems. That may help a bit...Mike

Personally, I prefer to blow them up with my mouth if it's just one or two. I don't do balloon animals or sculptures, and I usually only need 4 balloons for my shows. I saw a guy in Vegas at a casino using something that was like an air compressor. It was contained in his cart so I couldn't tell what it was but he just placed the balloon on a nozzle and pressed down to inflate. Pretty darn kewl! I watched someone else use a manual pump. One or two lifts and drops and that baby was full. This looked ok, and it was fast. I have seen the small hand pump used and I have 2 takes on that kind. 1.) The balloon artist made many many small pump actions and it was humorous to just watch him blow it up...facial expressions and all, which was kewl and 2.) another balloon artist that didn't say or do anything while pumping over and over until the balloon was inflated. This one was boring, repetitive, so I would do like #1 if I used that type of pump and keep the entertainment up while performing such a menial task.
magic_matt, you might want to keep your cheeks in, your avatar is showing some redness in that area. Walking Bob, germs??? ewwwwwwww! Maybe you should switch to Nitrous Oxide(laughing gas)instead. Germs are so...so...so...ICKEY! michaelwriting, try taking the stairs when going up a big building, those elevators are shortening your life. paulajayne, I have never heard of rupturing a blood vessel but I can see how it can happen. There is a lot of force going on there. Personally I would have quit after the first time. You are a BRAVE woman! I also heard a rumor that your dress in your avatar was a full length when you first started balloon sculptures. The Great Smartini, I checked with my health care provider. They said they would acually cover the cost of my hernia if I suffered it while blowing up a balloon. I could also collect short term disability and make the people covering my claim laugh their *** off!! Doc Pepper, what you say really makes sense. In this day and age, people are more concerned about airborne diseases and other peoples body fluids and germs. A pump makes the most sense for that reason alone. However, the folks at my insurance will miss their laugh because I'll never get to file my claim. Ron Reid, didn't I see you on PBS soliciting funds? "This station can only operate because of viewers like you" This message was brought to you by the number 5 and the letter P and from the financial group at http://www.balloonhq.com. I'll check that site out, thanks for sharing. Chrystal, hernias? HERNIAS?? Ok, I'm calling my health provider back. DARN, they have blocked my number!! SwissKid 52, you are blowing up the wrong end!! turn it around, it's easier from the OTHER SIDE!! |

Some people can do the muscle pass; others can't.
Some people can do the classic palm, others can't. Some people can blow up balloons by mouth, others can't. It's really that simple. Practice may help but I tell lay people, who ask if it's hard doing the twisting, that the hardest thing is blowing up the balloon; you either can do it or you can't. As for physical problems, like hernias, etc., when blowing them up, if you do it properly, there is no problem. I've checked this out with several doctors and they are unanimous in pointing that out. The worst that can happen, if you do it correctly, is you get tiny, pin-point-sized bubbles of air in the blood stream for a short time; or you may get "horn-players cheeks" (e.g. like Dizzy Gillespie). But nothing serious -- IF it's done correctly. And, yes, blowing them up by mouth is, indeed, somehow more "magical". |

HI,
I am fourtunate I can blow them up by mouth to the extent that I can fully inflate and explode a 260 with 1 breath, I can easily blow 100 to 150 an hour for many hours as long as I have acsess to water to drink. I dare say as I get older (I am 43 now) my abilty will deminish and I will end up using a pump but for now I prefer the mouth to inflate phillip |

I use to be able to do it alot, now I am afraid I'll pop a blood vessel. I can still do one, in a pinch, but not 3 back to back. I get dizzy headed.
Working with the diaphragm is correct, pushing the air with the stomach muscles. I create a tight bubble in my cheeks (like a chipmunck). It is that bubble in my cheeks that I break the first bubble in the balloons. There after, I use my stomach muscle to pust the air out of my lungs and fill the balloon in one breath. Don't use the white ones because they seem to be the toughest. Once you get one blown up, deflate it and work with it until you get the technique down.

I pull mouth coils out of my mouth, the kids absolutely love it in my routine, and I've never got complaints about children trying to eat paper. As for balloons, I usually blow them by mouth, unless I have to do more than 50. One other advantage of blowing them by mouth is that the air inside is warm, and they break less often. It is the first bubble that is the challenge; you have to use pressure from your cheeks to squash air into it. After that it is all lungs. Then again, despite Peter's medical research, I do worry a bit about popping blood vessels and other health-related problems from blowing baloons, so I think I'm going to get in the habit of blowing the first few by mouth, and then doing the rest by pump.

Not to mention the big thing now a days about peoples kids handleing something that had been in your mouth.
I'm sure they frown upon that but never say anything.

The late Walter "Wally" Wilson, used to use a pump to blow them up before the show, let them deflate and put them in his bag.
Pre-blown balloons are very easy to inflate by mouth. I too broke some vessles in my eyes and ears years ago, and use a pump if I do balloons now. |

Yeap. I never could get used to blowing them up by mouth. I use a pump now and find it just works easier for me and for what I do. I also like to talk and engage the people I am doing them for. A pump helps me this way as well.
Sometimes I do balloons inbetween my festival stage shows. Using a pump for me helps me save my voice and keeps my mouth from getting to dry etc. before my second show. I guess you have to find out what works best for you and go from there. Kyle

The mouth coil problem is EASY to resolve. The late Brian Flora used it in a "you do as I do" torn and restored paper routine. It came from the child's hand and was one of the bits in his school show and in his birthday show.

That's right. Because the balloon doesn't go IN the mouth (or appear to) whereas the mouth coil IS in the mouth (yuk!). As for air from the lungs filling the balloon with germs while a pump does not, that simply wrong! No need to have an argument about mouth coils (despite their name, they should never be pulled from the mouth); this has been more than adequately covered on other threads. |
