Hello Everyone,
I had an experience Saturday that I thought I would share and get some opinions on.. I went to an Arts Fest in our town.. probably about 1000 people there at any time through out the day.. I made a bunch of business cards and coupons advertising my services for childrens b-day parties, and social events. I performed magic in a walk around setting for 2 hours... got MANY oohhs and AAHHS, and had a successful day which resulted in 2 birthday party bookings next week, and a retirement home performance in the coming months.. My question is, is it wrong for me to expect tips while advertising? Granted, I did not do any lengthy performances.. no more than 2 tricks per group. So I did not get offered ANY tips. In the future, I would like to perform some of my full length routines to comprise about a 15 minute show... in crowded areas such as these.. but I am scared I will get the same reaction.. lots of oohhs and aahhs but no money.. does anyone else have a problem with these kind of crowds assuming that you have been hired for the entertainment and do not tip because they think you are being paid elsewhere? just curious.. Take care Tom

I think that any time you are perfroming, you are also soliciting business.
And I certainly do not think it wrong to expect payment for a service rendered. I have seen performers work (magic, and otherwise..) who have not seen a tuppence for their work. But it is usually because they dont present the expectation, or opportunity to be paid or tipped. Now, the question about expecting pay at the Arts Fair, is a bit sticky. Did you pay for performing rights there? Or did you otherwise have permission of the fair organizer? If not, then you should not expect to trade on their turf. BroDavid

Always have cards with you, and give them out as much as possible, I got a call once from someone who had a card that was maybe 3 yrs old.
If you have permission to be there, ask the event organizers, (they should be paying you!!!) as compensation for pay you may say something like "my normal price is $XX. but I may be willing to do it for $X. plus hat. Get it in writting! If you are just gate crashing, you are on your own. I won't say don't do it, (that would make me look hypocritical) but know what you are getting yourself into. If someone offers you a tip it is rude not to take it, but if you are not doing a show but just some tricks it is rude to ask. My $.02 worth
