I’m looking for a way of rising the Okito Voodoo Doll on a volunteer’s hand.
Does anybody has experience with this? Thanks in advance! |

Do it in your hand the regular way, then as you place it in their hand, wrap the loops around it....itll work if you do it quickly....making sure they don't notice either props...kinda risky, but if you must do it, you can pull it off.
as you know, with my Vodou backround, all I have to say is they cant touch it, its a Voodoo doll!!! they quickly recant their request then. you should do the same thing; especially having a latino backround..all stereotypes aside, my latino brothers and sisters have a rich backround of vodou known as Santeria among other names...they aint gonna mess with a voodoo doll!! So, long story short, try to avoid letting them hold it with some good patter! I made my doll all dusty and dirty a bit...burnt the edges slighty...looks more convincing methinks. Baba |

Thanks baba!
You pointed something important: If well presented, they shouldn’t want to touch that doll. Specially if the volunteer is from some specific cultural background were Vudú practices are common. Now, I ask you: does that doll looks like a real Vodou doll at all? Thanks again. |

Versions of voodoo dolls are countless...so it does look like a voodoo doll...besides, who ever seen a real one? not many people I'd say...
and like I said you can easily make it look more intense by charring the edges, making it look a bit dirty, add some beads to it, feathers if you wish...as long as it doesn't with it down...hell, ive even added a bit of chicken blood/feahters to it! like we both agreed upon, its all in the presentation indeed! peace. I'd be mostly nervous about the spec noticing the one foot, and it would blow everything. There's a chance of it being seen whether it faces them or away from them.
But, loops are a great idea ! One other method, it would take some work, but you could shim one or both of the legs and use an M5 on a hidden wrist strap. Just for proof of concept, I stood my Okito doll directly on my M5 with no shim other than the "gimmick" it comes with, it stood right up ! You'd need some add'l shimming though to get it to work through a person's hands. I did the charred thing, BTW, with mine, I think it helped. I also blackened the "thing" a little. I hadn't thought of the beads or feathers though, thanks for that babakali ! (I'll probably skip the chicken blood though) Darn, and I just got back from the craft store too. Oh well.

Brother EE,
Mary Tomich had a great idea with her Vodou Doll, she aged one of those "yard sale" tags (the kind wit the tag on the string) wit tea, then using a rubber stamp (custom made), she stamped "Made In Haiti" on the tag & strung it around the doll like it was a necklace...........A beautiful touch to any doll, in my opinion! Peace, The Krossbearer Baba my brother, I love the feathers & chicken blood, that's a perfect touch!.......im do that to mine tomorrow! Peace, The Krossbearer

Just a note for the M5 users, practice first with one leg, then set up both and try it, you get an odd twisting and turning with just one, this may be desired, but check first to make sure you get the moves you want. My haunted bear looks best if he does NOT twirl and dance in his box, HE should spring upright and stare at you. Your effect may just prefer the slow rise and spin to turn and look at the person holding it.......BWA Ha haaaaaa

Thanks for the M5 idea. I have always loved this effect, but
have a hard time getting the original method to work well with my skin. I will have to play with this. Thanks again. Dave |

Well, it's not working quite like I envisioned. I shimmed the legs but it just isn't powerful enough.
So.. the next step, I'll remove the shims if necessary, and try to carefully scoop out a bit of the "foot" from underneath, then implant a small NdFeB magnet, taking note of the pole orientation, then glue the "scoop" back into the foot. THAT oughta do it !

Krossbearer!
Adding something to the doll gave me an idea. Could something attached to an IT/ITR be added, maybe a crucifix for protection, prior to it's being raised. This could be done in the voluteers hand with good, scary warning not to squeeze, or move suddenly, etc. A few pins could prevent rough handling. Just a thought. |

Remember to see how it work with different people, and things do not allways work for everyone, this does add to the mystery. My hands are..well Fat! so I have trouble getting it to work on myself, I pay attention to the hands of people that I want to work these on, and select accordingly.
