I am looking for a good script for a children's performance of tenyo's "What's Next?" multiplying spot routine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks. --Scott Kahn, MD

Hi Scott,
I've performed 'What's Next' literally hundreds of times, and it is one my favorites for children of all ages. The patter I use is similar to the Tenyo's suggested patter in the instruction sheet, with some slight variance. First, depending on the age of the audience, I pose the question, "How many of you would like to learn how to do a magic trick... raise your hands?" (This usually gets their undivided attention, which insures they will sit quietly and study your every move.) "Okay, first I'll show you how the trick looks... and then I'll show you how it's done, so you can make one of your own and fool all your friends. As you can see, I have a white card with a black spot on this side... (flip) and four spots on this side... (turn) but, I also have three spots on this side... (flip) and, finally, I have six spots on this side." At this point, I look around the room, letting the effect soak in for a moment (not too long... but a few seconds.) Sometimes they become fidgety or a little noisy with over-excitement... I then just gesture with my finger to my mouth for them to be quite and continue, "Before I show you how this trick is done, let me repeat... (repeat the above moves and patter, at slightly faster pace this time.) Sometimes they're noisier at this point... I just immediately say in a loud firm voice, "Okay, here's how the trick is done..." (you will probably be able to hear a pen drop at this point) "First, take a white card like this and paint a spot right in the middle... but also, paint another spot here on the bottom." (lift hand to reveal the hidden spot) "See... if you hide this spot, (cover spot) it looks as tho there's only one spot on this side" (flip) "Paint four spots on this side... (lift hand to reveal hidden spot) and paint a fifth one here." (cover spot) "if you hide this spot, it will look like only four spots when there are actually five." (turn) "When you show them three spots, they will think there's another spot here where your hand is." (lift hand to reveal blank space... re-cover blank space) (flip) "When you show them six spots, they don't know that there are really just five." (lift hand to reveal blank) "So, it looks like this when you put it all together." (repeat flips and turns again with the basic patter.) Set up for finale... turn card around to show three (hand covering gaff) "Sometimes when you show this to your friends, they may ask you to move your hand... if you're a good magician, you should be able to show them that there are really three spots on this side... and, really six on this side... but if you're a really, really great magician, umm...like me... you should be able show them that there were actually eight spots the whole time." Hope this helps... this routine has always gotten me great response. Good luck, Dave

"you guys want to learn the secret of a magic trick? I'll teach you how to build it next time you do arts and crafts at school or at home on a rainy day. Get yourself a piece of cardboard or wood just like this, something that wont fold in half, it has to be sturdy. Next paint it all white and you will draw some black dots on it with a magic marker, like this. It kinda looks like a die dosent it?? you know like when you play trouble or monopoly?
You draw six spots on this side, 3 on this side, on this side you have 4 and....on...this.....one you have ONE!?!?!? etc this is how you do it (explain it to them) you know theres 2 HUGE secrets if you want to do this thing properly, the first one is practice and the second is to never turn the board too fast on this side, or that side, cause they'll see the extra dots..got it!? good!! now you can perform this for your friends and family right!?" if you play it like you don't know what going on I think this trick gets stronger. |

I can't remember where I saw this (or read it?)... but there is a cute routine where you use the "What's Next" card as a magic calculator... 3 minus 1 =2, etc.
Push the button (spot).. turn it over and there's your answer. Kind of neat routine. |

By 'play like you don't know' is Eric suggesting a style for the story he gave or a competing storyline in which the magician is puzzled each time he turns over the card? Have I missed Eric's point?
