Can you recommend any DVD(s) which is like Gregory Wilson's "On the spot" that do magic with "real audience"? Thanks for your help.
best, Hirase

Many DVD's by L&L have live audiences. For example, the 'On The Loose' series with Bill Malone or the 'Mind Mysteries' series by Richard Osterlind.
Others, like 'Easy To Master Card Miracles' by Michael Ammar are done in front of a live group of 5-6 people. Is there a certain type of live magic performance you're looking for (cards, stage, etc)?

Be careful with the "life audiance" in the "Osterlind DVDs". Some of these spectators can be found on a lot of DVDs from L&L. Strange......

L&L Jeff Sheridan Series- once again has a live audience. However it's funny- some of the same people are also in the Malone segments, on his DVDS. Quite amusing....

I know Sankey just came out with a DVD (I don't care what anybody says about the guy) that has him performing for a normal audience. No fakery. I can't remember the name of it but if you search for just a minute or two I'm 100% sure you'll find it.

Well, yes -- L & L videos have LIVE audiences. But I think Hirase was asking (re: "real" audiences) for audiences that are, for want of a better phrase, "unprepped." L & L's audiences tend to homogenize: There's David, there's John emoting, there's Tania, etc.
The most "real" audiences I've seen (even more so than Greg Wilson's) are on Dan Turcotte's *Anywhere - Anytime Close-Up Magic* DVDs. (www.youdomagic.com; nope, I have no vested interest other than thinking Dan's stuff is great) The videos on the DVDs show Dan working with customers in a restaurant, not a studio audience. So you get to see some real-world reactions. (Also includes a bunch of PDF books of instruction.) I'm sure there are other videos with real-world audiences, but I can't think of any off-hand. *jeep! --Chet

Thanks anyone!
Yep, I mean, as what mormonyoyoman mentioned, the real world audience. I will try to find out Dan's materials, thank you. best, Hirase

People keep speculating on the L&L audiences. I have now done 3 sets of videos there and each time most of the audience was new. Except for about 7 or 8 people who make up the staff and close friends, everyone else is pooled from the Lake Tahoe community and those who drive in. Magicians are placed in the rear of the audience and new members are further up front. Sure, great spectators are placed right up front, but this is no different that any televison show. I have seen remarks from some about how they would like to see an audience of "real" people, even hecklers! Now, what kind of nonsense is that? Why would you spend thousands on producing a video only to see it ruined by hecklers. Didn't we already see that with a certain metal bending video???
I can only speak for myself and my own videos, but the reactions I get on those are totally typical of what I get in my live shows. From the complete onslaught of emails, letters and PM's on this forum, I can attest that magicians who are using this material are certainly getting the same reactions! Richard |

There was no intent to tear on the L & L audiences, and I apologize for sounding that way. I guess it's because John seems like he's going over the top, David is always gaping open-mouthed, and Bill Malone is always flirting with the blond lady. (Well, that's only on Bill's videos. And what's wrong with me that I can remember David's name and John's name, but not the blond's?) But it's easy to forget that we're talking about people who are more than faces and names to the folks who've worked with 'em. Such as Richard Osterlind, who remembers these people as attentive and appreciative.
And Richard, I have no doubt that the reactions you got from the L & L audience were true -- because my mentor and I, as well as my magic-reluctant wife, had just as strong (and stronger) reactions when we watched your first Mind Mysteries DVD. (How can you and Banachek BEAR to give out all the AMAZING material that you and he do????) These examples of astonishment are why I believe we're in the midst of the second Golden Age of Magic -- due to such quality material available through the double-edged sword of video. *jeep! --Chet

I think the presence of the camera aids an audience reaction. Look at David Blaine (and no I am not knocking him as a performer), but people want to be on TV. What is the best way to make sure you don't end up on the cutting room floor? Be a great reactor, if you just went 'gee that was alright' you think you'd get the first 15 seconds of the 15mins you were promised? I would much rather the L&L approach to the magic makers approach of a one on one discussion. Where the performer is sometimes not even fully presenting the effect, more just showing you it and then teaching it.

And, of course, some react better than others. These are the ones you want up front. The bottom line is you want to TEACH. That is best done showing how well the routines play and then explaining all the little nuances. If you get a deadbeat who doesn't really react well, then you lose some of the potential of the routine and consequently can't talk about it during the explanations. Sincerely, Richard |

Ahoy, Richard! (Sheesh, a punk like me calling Osterlind by his first name. Is this a great country or what?)
Thank you, but I didn't feel you were coming down on me. I did want to apologize for any bruised feelings because - for all I know - there might be L & L audience members reading this! Just felt a bit guilty I suppose --- but then, you'd have known that already. (Yes, my mother's ancestors were Jewish now that you mention it.) *jeep! --Chet

Gazzo "Uncensored" is three different sets. One at the Magic Castle, one at a Renaissance Faire, and the third on the street in Boston.
Full crowds each time. (BTW, this is not a teaching video, although you can learn more by watching his example than many other so called"teaching" tapes.)
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Here, let me say a few words since I created this topic. I am not trying to say that the production of L&L DVDs are not as good as those with real world audience. TO me, the most important thing is the trick itself and the presentation of the performer. I personally own Dr. Osterlind's (let me say that out of my respect to him) ETMMM vol 1 and 2. The tricks inside are excellent!
Yet, the reason I want to know more about DVD with real audience is that I want to see the REACTIONS and potential "difficulties" when performing in real life. After viewing for a lot of learning materials, I'd like to see the reaction of someone from the street, that's all. I really think that 's interesting! ^^ Would you agree? best, Hirase

Hirase,
I agree that seeing a performer in "real" conditions is a very important part of learning. But seeing them taped is always going to be different. People always act differently when they know they are being recorded. If you really want to see the "real world" then that is where you have to go. I see as many acts, plays, musicals and other magicians "live" as I possibly can. (The type of act really isn't important to learn audience management!) Richard |

Hello Hirase, I realize my following rant doesn't exactly pertain to your original post, but others started to talk about the L&L audience, so here goes...
I have to agree 100% with Richard here. I was at the taping of 2 of his 3 shows to date. I drive 4 hours (each way) to the tapings..because I love magic and mentalism, I admire the world class talents of the magicians and mentalists that L & L Publishing contracts with, and when I attend the tapings, I try to just watch and allow myself to be amazed. I try to forget about what I know and just react. I have never been paid a dime to sit in the audience. Louis Falanga is an awesome host, and of the dozen or more tapings I have attended (because Louis has always graciously allowed me back), Louis has never ever asked anyone to "act" a certain way. So let's just set that record straight. Hopefully, people won't decide which videos to buy based on who's in the audience. Personally, I'm more concerned about the effects, and the teaching of them. I understand that when I perform, I may get an over-the-top reaction from some people, and a dead-pan reaction from others. Besides, I just think that it's much more enjoyable, in general, to see a lively (and don't forget the eye candy!) audience. Just my 2 cents. Kaylan |
