Other then 13 steps, what books or resources are out there for learning a good magic square. I know chuck hickok has a good one in his book Mentalism Inc, but are there any other books out there that have a good magic square method/presentation?

Back in the March 2002 MUM magazine, Ted Lesley wrote up a great presentation called, "The Mentalist's Magic Square". In it, the performer shuffles a deck of cards, and then has a spectator cut off a portion of the cards. Dealing from the top of the remaining portion, the performer uses 16 cards to create a magic square. It is then shown that the arrangement gives the same total.
Each time you do this, the particular total will be different. For example, we'll say that the total of the square is 28. Once you've amazed the audience at how quickly you've created a magic square for the number 28, you're ready for the kicker. You turn to the person who cut off the cards originally, and ask them to count how many cards they cut off - it's the same number (28, in this case)! |

Scott this is the same as the one in Steele's book, I think it is credited to Robert Parrish & Burt Allerton, the copy I have is from 1952, nothing new in magic.....?

Dave,
The first part of Ted Lesley's article, which describes this feat, is given direct credit to Robert Parrish and Bert Allerton. Ted Lesley then goes on to detail his own mental version of the effect. What is the name of the Steele book? |

The method for the magic square in Chuck's Mentalism Incorporated book is quite pedestrian, the same as you see all over the place; his presentation for it, however, as everything else in that book, is very good. Chuck has a separately-sold square called The Diagonal Magic Square, and this is extremely good.
I prefer Mark Farrar's magic square Web site over the one already mentioned. It's filled with excellent information, including an extensive bibliography, and is well-suited for magical usage. And, also as already mentioned, there's my own Mindsights. ... Doug

I've combined my learnings from "Mindsights" with a presentational idea shared by Bill Cushman: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......t=326432

I've done some interesting tweeking of the Magic Square idea after seeing Haim Goldberg, Mark Salem and then most recently, David Ben OPEN their shows with it. In his TRICKS show which just recently closed in Toronto, David begins with an artist's easel and paint brush and proceeds to do an "Impressionistic" masterpiece about a gentlemen his "subject" has been thinking about. When he turns the picture around, the audience sees for the first time that he's only written a bunch of numbers as his impression, but of course he reveals that numbers combine to reflect the fellows age etc. etc.
It was quite lovely - and non mathematical looking... I think that's the secret! In my own book, MESSING WITH MINDS, I get away from the usual grid looking thing all together with something called Mental Magic Squared. Indeed, magicians who have seen this in performance don't even realize I'm going towards a magic square effect. The idea is that I'm sending out numbers to everybody in the audience and seeing whether they "get" their's. The numbers are anything under 50. They never actually say anything. I just walk around going. "Good". "Yes". "Excellent" as I jot down numbers that they and I are apparently "getting". But I stop at somebody about half way through, after clearly writing a bunch of numbers down from others, and say, "I'm sorry, what are YOU getting from me?". They'll say something like 32 and I indicate that - no - I certainly was not sending out such a number. I print their number in big numerals on the back of my card and then carry on with a bunch more people. I'me left with a card with numbers shared telepathically with everyone...except the person who had (mistakenly?) said 32 or whatever. After looking perplexed, I comment "Oh I see...you're VERY clever Mr. 32. Does everybody see this?" Then with a bit of banter I reveal that "everybody's" numbers add up to 32, every which way etc. The key is, the magic square element is held up completely until the end and the final revelation, is a lovely surprise from the apparent failure of Mr. 32 do what everybody else has been able to achieve. It's been a lot of fun and I've had great success with it. I hope all of the above makes sense. In any case, you can find performance details of Mental Magic Squared in my book. The particular square I use by the way is adapted from Al Baker's work on the subject. Hope this helps...

There is a VERY good magic square mixed with psychometry in Ted Lesley's book "Paramiracles".
Thanks! Scott B.
