I've never tried a Dremel with coins, but I use one to modify plastic "BIC-type" pens.
Depends on what you are doing to the coin, I guess. Most Dremels have a fair amount of runout and are not intended for precision work. They are also most often used handheld. Most coinwork is done on precise, controllable (and expensive!) machining mills. I think trying that work with a Dremel would be a frustrating experience. (I *do* polish my half dollars with a Dremel, tho. It's ideal for that.) |

Hi, I was the one who made the post about using the dremel for gaffed coins, I do it and it works. You have to shop around, and get some very fine dremel points. A hobby store is a great place for this. Also, you generally have to get two coins to make one finished coin, as the dremel point does not make a fine enough cut to do it with one coin. Also, you will have to make a stand for holding the dremel, as it is hard (if not impossible) to get even the slightest bit of accuracy with just your hand, I don't know if you can buy one of these, but I made my own(hard to explain, just think about it, make a plan, and you'll think of a way to make one), this is essential, as you can then control exactly where the cut is being made, it is possible, and just takes some practice until you can make awesome gaffed coins (practice with pennys, and bits of scrap metal).

You might want to read this thread and the included link by Timothy to get some of the inside scoop on gaffed coins. Regards, Gerald |
