I am going to do MOABT in my show next week (I have done it numerous times before), but I want to change the way I force the book. I am going to bring out 3 books 2 normal books and the Mother. I know the classic force of, "pick up two books, and hand me on" basically the magicians choice, but is there another way to force the book on a person so it looks completely random.

The 100% hit way is, of course, the magician's force which you have just mentioned.
But a more miraclous way would be to use subtities. But I have to warn you that its not 100% hit rate. You need an Out jus in case. But if done suceesfully, which happens most of the time, it will be a miracle. If you are not sure of what I mean by subtitles, you might wanna give Banachek's PSI vol 1 or his psychology subtities a look. hope this helped and all the best to your show cheerios

Hello,
If you are a working pro, get two more MOABs, and change the dust jackets. Therefore you don't have to use "Equivoque". It looks far cleaner and directer. That means you can save "Equivoque" for an another effect. Do a wise magician's choice. |

You have seen, or can get hold of "Stuff The White Rabit" John Lenehan (sp?) performs MOAB with a great subtlty. I think it may be mentionedin Banacheks Psychological Subtleties too, unsure aboiut that mind.

I suppose you could do away with magicians choice and simply have the user pick any book at random,
If it's a hit then wonderful, If not... perform the hoy booktest with the two non gimmicked books. then move onto the original effect with the remaining book. Maybe it won't fit with your style but it'll certainly remove any feeling of "funny buisness" from the minds of the spectators. |

I believe you could spend some time considering your wording, acting and audience management during the Equivoque. A good actor can make it look truly random, and fair. While I do consider any subtleties to enhance the procedure I still think that the flow of speech is most important. Every word coming out of your mouth has to sound like they belonged there in the first place. No pauses, no hesitations. When I was doing this for a friend I completely blew it because I paused after the selection, I had to think about what I was going to say and thus I ruined the effect of complete fairness.

I've found that one of the keys to the magician's force is in the acting. If you say it very quickly and stiff, they seem to think "he's done this before". Act as though you're making up the rules on the spot to some degree...but that leads to another thought, being the idea that it looks like you're just "forcing" them to take that book.
My thoughts, and I've done this before, is to have a stack of books and just have that one on top. That way you have more than one and it looks like you just took the easiest. Play with it and just see what works. Rick

Your best bet I think would be to have something to do with each book. You have 3 books so you bring three persons on stage and ask them to choose any book and do the test appropriated to the book the picked.

Why bother having three books? Why not use just two and ask them to hand you one of them? Whichever one they hand you use the appropriate one. Or better yet just use the one book and don't worry about what they think. It is your performance. Besides, how many people carry more than one book around with them at any given time?

Yeah I hear ya Samuel. Perhaps its the guilt factor. I had a TV appearence last week. I planned to do a book test but ran out of time. I had two paperbacks on the table and host was going to go for one of their own books to show it wasnt a set up. Using their book was MY Idea.

Why bother forcing the book -- be able to do something with ALL of the books you use...

I wish I had read this thread earlier.
I was asked to do an encore after my usual performance, and so I dug my books out of my bag, and proceeded with the force. I guess I had a bit of a heckler for a volunteer, after the force, he apparently changes his mind and asked to use the other book. Luckily, although it was unplanned, all 3 books were set up for different effects. So I changed effects midway through and everything went well. It was a valuable lesson learned for me. |

I'm toying with the idea of a single book with a certain page having been torn out before the show and then using Archer's Chinese Menu trick to arrive at the page number that is now missing.
This page will be in an envelope that I gave to the spectator before starting the trick. Any comments, suggestions, opinions from those who work this type of effect would be appreciated. Oh, by the way, this will be the final phase of a three phase routine. On the page from the book that was in the envelope will also be written a previously chosen card and the color of a crayon/marker that had also apparently been freely selected before. Thanks for any feedback, Howard
