I have spent the last few years tweaking my computer to be soooo sweet!! Right now, here's the specs:
athlon 64 3500+ asus a8v deluxe ati X800 XT Platinum (8x agp) 16x dual layer dvd burner (sony) 16x dvd rom drive (liteon) ati TV Wonder Elite (theatrix through sapphire) The case is the CM Stacker case...it's freaking huge!!! and now...for the best part of the system...the hard drives.. 2 X 74 GB Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM Serial ATA 2 X 250 GB Western Digital Caviar 7,200 RPM Serial ATA 1 X 300 GB Seagate Barricuda 7,200 RPM IDE 1 X 100 GB Western Digital 7,200 RPM IDE 1 X 60 GB Western Digital 5,000 RPM IDE add that all together...and unformatted, that's 1,108 Gig! a lil over 1.1 TB! Formatted, however, and with a version of linux on it...my windows drives only have 1,001 GIG, or just barely 1 TB (TeraByte) sadly, right now there's only about 300 gig free!!! where does all the free space keep going to?!?!?! |

Nice.
I am jealous of your beautiful system. I would love to have one like that myself. How much RAM are you running in your system? Must get awful hot in there too. Fan cooled or liquid cooled? How many fans? Must have a huge power supply as well. S. p.s. In all actuality a Terabyte is 1024 gigs. I don't know why I feel it necessary to bring that up. But you see people do that all the time. 1000 megs = gig, 1000 gigs = TB, 1000 TB = Petabyte, etc. When you start talking numbers that big, it adds up to a lot of storage overlooked. |

Wow..can you do letters faster than my 450Mhz. 256M ram, 13Gb Hard drive system?

2 GB ram (2048 MB) , though, it's dual channel DDR, so the system only recognizes it as 1GB
600 watt PS (with some pretty blue lights) 5 fans (2 over hard drives, one blows air across the mobo, 1 side, and 1 rear..for now) the vid card has a new heatsink and fan (arctic cooler Silencer 4) and the CPU has a heatpipe made by coolermaster. A heatpipe is sort of like a radiator. It's got a ton of copper, and some pipes with water in them. The water moves as it gets heated, and the copper and fan at the top dissipate(sp?) the heat. The avg temp of my cpu stays between 38 - 42 degrees C Satori...I was wondering if anybody was gonna catch me on that!!! I thought about putting that down...but then was like...hm..nah! at least someone else in the forum knows what they're talking about too!!! hehe! and YES, IT IS A FREAKING SPACE HEATER!!! and Howard.. I bet it can write letters faster (or atleast load up word and use the text recognizing faster)!!!! But I use it mainly for the games (and a lil game programming here and there!) , and my video editing / dvd authoring Job! That right there takes up a lot of space!!! I edit weddings for a videographer, and each one is roughly 50 - 60 gig of raw footage, taken down to fit on a 4 gig dvd (all of which I keep as backup on my system for at least 2 months, then it goes to dvd) hence the reason for all the storage!!! With my old system, it took me over 4 hours to render video, now this takes about 35 - 40 minutes...just a lil improvement!! Later, Kevin |

Pezgod, you need to wear earplugs when you're on the computer ? ;-)
I have a 2.6g P4 system, GeForce 5900 in the Antec Sonata case, that thing is so quiet when I powered it up for the first time I thought, "oh no, I wired something wrong, it's dead !", then to my amazement, the BIOS info screen popped up and off she went. That case rocks. Beautiful grand piano black gloss finish on it too. The next system I build will be an Athlon 64 bit based model, I usually build AMD systems, but for a change I went with the P4 last time.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Actually, it's not too loud! it's quieter than my last PC...the only fan that can get REALLY loud..which is the one I forgot to mention..cuz I never turn it on, is the one on my northbridge chip. that thing is like a *** rocket engine! way too loud! but the rest of the system is fairly quiet...you can still hear it running...don't get me wrong...and there are PLENTY of computers WAY more quiet than mine!! but it's my little baby, so I don't mind a little noise! (the only bad part is that because I wanted to keep track of the speed of the northbridge fan, I had to hook it up to my temperature gauge. (collermaster Aerogate II) and that's got a builtin feature to raise fan speed when things get too hot. the only open spot on my temp gauge was where the video card should go...so it's reading the video card temp, and the fanspeed for the northbridge..when I play a game, the fan speeds up, cuz of the heat from my video card, and my system gets pretty noisy!! I need to find a better way to rig that part up!!
Howard... I still run my AMD-K6 (233mhz) computer too!! it's one of my linux boxes! so I guess I've got multiple horses! |

Real nerds have two or more servers running on a T1 out of their house.
<-- raises hand. |

WOW!! Congrats ricker! right now I'm in a dorm room...nice little 10x13 prison cell of a room! I'm running on a "T1" right now...but If I do a speedtest...it's just a hair slower than ISDN!! BAH!!! I can't even play my xbox live here!!! :'( Oh well, I'll be done with school, and have my BS in Computer Science next december! Then I'll be making the big bucks and be able to run servers off of a T3!! but I think that'll have to wait till after I pay off my $50,000+ in loans!

That's a whole lot of power. Do you do complex mathematical models or compute PI to infinity ?
What other uses do you have for that spec PC?

I bet solitare plays really good on that thing.
Hey as a psuedo related point, my brilliant nephew is now part of our prison reformation poulation. The govn't has a problem, it seems, with hacking, stealing programs, cracks etc. My wife said she wants me to take WinMX off my PC at home. Women...........

Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Hey, I've spent years building my Athlon 1900+, 512MB PC3200 RAM, GeForce 3, full tower with Enermax 430W PSU, CD Writer, DVD Drive, 120 GB HDD. OK So, it's already WAY out of date but I put a lot of time, effort and money into this thing!

Im running a small sun server with 256 switches and 16 x 72mb hd's. I also have a fibre backbone installed.
If you could only see my prism cabs and my backup pdu is also a minor miracle. This is all my own equipment.
