I recently received the Impossible Penetration from Viking and thought I would share a review.
The effect is very simple and straightforward. You display a wooden finger guillotine. It is freely shown. A spectator places their finger in the opening. The blade is push down through the spectator's finger. After a pause to let the effect sink in, you split open the stocks and blade is seen clearly wrapped around the finger. I carry mine in a wooden cigar box, wrapped in a nice cloth. I mention that it is an antique cigar cutter. Sometimes I will ask what people think it is and they will provide the answer of a cigar cutter. As for the quality, this is a very well made and very handsome prop. It resets instantly and will standup to some examination. The handling is very easy and you will pick it up very quickly. The effect is fantastic, it's just as it reads. Really slays people. Highly recommended. |

Clarence Miller makes his version using walnut and boxwood, I believe, that is very nice and even serial numbered & signed. This can be obtained on Kenna Thompson's website. I also own the Viking version and for a collector both are a necessity.

Nice prop, but what an unnatural thing to drag out for spectators.
A mini guillotine?

It's still a great effect...unnatural or not. =)

Actually Clarence Miller (of Kentucky) is the originator of the effect, and for a while Chalet had the manufacturing rights, and then Viking started making them, all with the consent and permisssion of Clarence. I have 2 of the original handmade Miller numbered versions with very low numbers (one in basswood and the other in walnut), one of the Chalet, and one of the Viking. If you wanna use the "Cigar Cutter" routine, try to find the cigar cutter version of the Hades finger chopper. It's hard to find, but well worth the time and (usually a lot of) money. Is it obvious I have too many finger choppers and too much time on my hands?

I remember the first time I saw this effect (when I was a novice magician in 7th Grade). We had a sub. for science class who liked to do magic tricks, and this is one he used. I never forgot about it, and it has been one of the most memorable tricks I have ever witnessed. I should probably buy one. What's the website? |

I have seen it in ads before, but never seen it done. I got an idea to do the same effect with a deck of cards, the deck is the stock, and the card is the blade. The routine is not that straight forward though. I still need to get that deck made. Does anyone know where I can get some cards laser cut?

Wayne,
Yes, it is the really nice Cigar Cutter version of the Hades chopper. Has the nice lazer engraved wooden base, the cloth carrying bag...everything. It's in the display case with the other dozen or so finger choppers. Steve Thomas |

I also have one of the older hand numbered and signed ones. They work so well. I actually use it in every kid show I do. I get 5 minutes of great comedy out if it. In adult shows I cut the middle finger of the participant and at the end of the show he holds up his middle finger to the audeince (just to prove that its allright ya know).
Be on the look out for the other versions that don't slide up and down as easily as the hand made ones. The gimmick may be exposed if you pull up too far on the newer ones. S. Patrick |
