I'm not usually one to take stock in unusual things, strange, considering strange things happen around me all the time, for instance...
I've been wanting to do the Ripper "Dear Boss" letter effect for awhile now, so I went ahead and ordered it yesterday. Well, I'm doing a little background r&d tonight and I went to this site and wanted to know what happened in Ripper History on this day -- you'll have to go here and see for yourself. I am not making this up. If this isn't bizarre I don't know what is. DA p.s. Use the date this post was made. |

Spooky!!!!
Hi DA, I ordered the "Dear Boss" letter myself last week and I'm eagerly awaiting it. Living in Jack's 'backyard' so to speak, I've always had a keen interest on the subject and I feel this effect would play well to my style. I'll be interested to hear your experiences with it as well! I can recommend some good books on the subject if you care.....mind you, you've already found a good source at http://www.casebook.org Best Regards Harry X |

I'm currently in the midst of reading Alan Moore's "From Hell."

Hey - if you have any questions about "him", I am a member of casebook and an amateur ripperologist.
My wife hates that we have a whole shelf in the bedroom devoted to "Saussy Jack." "From Hell" is a cool story, however most ripperologists dismiss the "royalty theory." and Moore took a lot of liberty with the characters ...but again, GREAT story! Blessings, |

To add to the Ripper stew I would suggest the seance presentation by Docc Hillford on his "Weerd" audio tapes.

I do a few effects around the ripper story. Not exactly kids show stuff but... I think the illusions that revolve around Jack and Lizzie Borden etc... are the acting upon humans' love of the gross and unthinkable. (Kinda what the doctors said when I was born)

Hank Lee sells "In Lizzie's Hand" but not "Dear Boss". Where can one get "Dear Boss"?
Thanks! Steve H

You might want to check out the book, The Bell Tower, which I'm reading at the moment.
It claims the Ripper fled to the U.S. and eventually continued his work in San Francisco. Supposedly a true story. |

I'm partial to the Tumblety suspect theory myself...
You should read "Jack the Ripper: First American Serial Killer" (previously published as "The Lodger), for more information on this most likely suspect.

I must admit I was also a buyer of the 'Francis Tumblety Theory' as well, Philemon. However, I recently read a book "The Cases That Haunt Us" by John Douglas - who used to be one of the FBI's top profilers and now works as a consultant I believe. He totally blows most of the 'usual suspects' right out of the water.
The book also includes, amongst others, his take on the Lizzie Borden case as well. I highly recommend this book to any 'Ripperologists', it may make you question some of your favourite theories.......or then again, merely strenghten them. Best Regards Harry X |

Profiling?
Isn't that just another form of cold-reading?

Been doing that one for years! My best clients are two of my other personalities and then again, being psychotic and a talented Reader has helped me get into some of the darndest situations.

I've got a question for you...have any of you been to London, and visited the London Dungeon? It's a mix between chamber of horrors, haunted house, history museum, and amusement park.
One section includes gruesome recreations of Ripper victims. They're too good (as in accurate) for viewing by the squeamish. Anyway, near the end of the Ripper section of the tour, the audience is lead into an operating theater (if you don't know what an o.t. is, watch the old Bela Lugosi version of Draula...the scene when Dr. Seward is examining one of Dracula's victims). Okay, so one of the victims is laid out on an autopsy table, and some doctors examine her. They begin to speculate on the dozens of suspects who could have been the ripper. The lamps begin to flicker and fade. An unholy giggle trickles trough the air and then.... BOOOM!! The walls right in front of the audience burst open with a burst of flame. The laughter of Jack the Ripper fills the room and then disappears down the hall....the hall which you must exit through. Even though I'm a veteran of haunts, I was still freaked out by this effect. If you ever get to go...I suggest you go. It's a little bit of a tourist trap...but it's ghoulish fun. -Pete |

For the Ripperologists: take a look at Patricia Cornwell's "Portrait of a Killer - Jack the Ripper Case Closed". She builds a pretty good case that world-famous artist Walter Sickert is the culprit. Another well written argument for a particular individual being the Ripper.

This is a good book...but then I love speculative writings on the Ripper. I even love one book that theorized that the Ripper emmigrated to San Francisco, set himself up as a preacher...of course, several months after the preacher's msyterious disappearance, an unholy smell began to creep from his church's bell tower...
I'm not sure which is more insane...the number of theories behind the identity (identities?) of Jack the Ripper...or the fact that Cornwell spent 2 million British Pounds on one of Sickert's paintings, only to rip it to shreds to look for evidence of Sicket being The Ripper...only to find nothing. AH! Another weird and twisted nail in the coffin of the Whitechapel Surgeon. Perhaps an effect could be made that incorporates the findnig of evidence in (through, transformed into) a painting. |
