I try to practice a minimum of two hours a day, and usually end up doing more!

For me there are two different areas of focus:
1) Studying -- This will include reading books and studying routines without actually practicing the mechanics. 2) Mechanics\Routine practice time -- This will include actually practicing mechanics\movements\gestures, misdirection etc of a routine. I find I have far more time for reading\studying than I do for working through the mechanics. I try to get a solid 30 minutes of actual practice time in a given day. This will usually focus on a trick or a couple of commonly themed tricks. Lately I've been working on my sponge ball routine. One problem I find I have is that since there is no spectator to gauge participate I find it a bit more challenging. I think I need a camcorder to film my sessions so I can really see how these things playa out. Jeff |

I follow exactly Jeffdell's practice philosophy!
Think of it as a funnel of skillsets - start out broad (top of the funnel) then with practice (direct, going over it in your head, by osmosis), very rough basic idea handling, reading, viewing dvds, watching others, talking with others, posting on this forum, and should narrow it down to the point of decent competency (bottom of funnel) exact handling with sleights, subtleties, patter, rhythm (on/off beats)-then you practice to refine and change or tweak the routine. To many just knuckle down and go right into it without deconstructing the trick, etc. and what results sometimes is frustration which leads to self doubt and reinforcing horrible techniques. |
