My point of view about magicians in general - they do a lot of good in this world and perform magic and help to lighten up the world in a very positive way. People in general are very stressed out these days. And here is a lot of hate and anger and frustration. I make money with magic and I do it for a living but what makes my day is when I do a show and after the performance members of the audience tell me how much my show has made their day! Ormond McGill the dean of American hypnotists said once life is an amusement park or a battle flied. It is all how you choose to look at it. I can't speak for you or anyone else in the Café but I choose life to be an amusement park…

In truth I see myself as much more.
I agree totally with your views of the magician, and I strive daily to reach the definition that you have provided me. I admire you for your passion and the honorable way that you view what we all do. I must say that I would love to have a chance to see perform at some point. From speaking with you the past few days and therefore getting feel for you viewpoint I sincerely believe that you cause that sense of wonderment that we all strive for. By the way, I’ll take the amusement park, buy I think McGill missed a category, as my life feels more like a zoo most of the time!

By the way - great post Jonathan Brown, Thanks for posting. And I also agree with many of Clarks posting. I see the Café as a place to share ideas and make magic better. Clark and Jonathan I have some video of me performing at my web site below.... Plus video of past masters of magic.
Enjoy...

I think Glen Bishop can relate to the reviews people are giving these dvd's because his dvd's recieved the same feedback and he thought it was all insults and cheapshot as opposed to consumer opinions... I watched weapons of a cardshark today and I wouldn't say its the worst investment out there... Ive seen much worse dvd's for twice the amount of money, but that's another story. As for the title, I did expect to see a little more from reading the title as it is catching.

What I found out later that their objection was the fact that there was no magic show of me PERFORMING my material. Only teaching and technical application of magic effects. In fact insults that came were directed personally toward me as a person from the pictures and video from my web site from another forum. Not the material on the DVD's. I performed and lectured the same routines on my both DVD's at the Magic Castle and they liked it. Plus my DVD's have gotten complements from some very big names in magic. Including Bill Malone, Marshall Brodien, Bev Bergeron Vinny The Godfather. A Very Different Thing than this thread! I choose to only show the magicians my technical side. If they want to see a performance they have to come to one of my shows!

What would you consider to be technical???

Are asking me what I consider technical in magic? Or in the relationship of teaching magic? In my opinion the technical side of magic is just the application of the moves and the slights. And they are only used to get from point A - to - Point B in a magic effect.
The effect of magic must be experienced by an audience through demonstration or the performance of a magic effect. A demonstration of a magic effect is different than a performance because the performance is a feature of entertainment where the demonstration is just the demonstration of the technical side and the magic is experienced as a technical science. Ed Marlo was talked about a lot in magic as being to technical and not entertaining for many years. Some say John Scarne was the same way. I never met John Scarne but I did know Ed Marlo. And I have seen him perform many times for a lay audience and he was quite good. Very entertaining and had a great sense of humor when he did magic. In the several lay audience performances that I have seen the lay audience had no idea who he was in magic and had no knowledge as to the fact that he wrote magic books or had a large reputation in magic. Often called a magicians magician. Through books Marlo showed the magic world a technical side of himself. Few saw any humor or the warm side of Ed Marlo until the cardician video's. Marlo put up with a lot of insults over the years about his magic being to technical and not entertaining. And they insulted how he looked and how he talked. Yet when Marlo was PERFORMING in front of a REAL AUDIENCE he WAS ENTERTAINING! And his audience did not think HIS magic was TO TECHNICAL! BECAUSE they were ENTERTAINED! Because Marlo was doing the job of entertaining with card magic at that moment! Marlo is gone now and we have new younger magicians putting stuff out and taking a risk - getting their name out there. Some if it is great - some good - some not so good. But I feel that they are light years ahead of others that do nothing but insult - BECAUSE THEY TAKE THE RISK! Just like Ed Marlo and Dai Vernon did!

In my oppinion the DVD is cool, and is probably a good way to learn this gambling moves and to understand whats going on and how people can use them to cheat BUT the performer is not as great as should be.
In spite of this I highly recomend both DVDs, you will understand the mechanics cause the moves are well explained but if you are looking for perfection don´t imitate Mr Wessmiller(is not difficult to appreciate the lack of experience and practice), you will have a lot of work to do in front of a mirror or a camera. |
