Just heard this one;
A man is competing in the Olympics. It is the finals of his event, he performs the long jump and sets a new worlds record. The jump is legal, and entered into the world record book. It is legitimate in every way. The man is not disqualified, however, the man is not awarded the Gold Medal. He is not awarded the Silver or even in fact the Bronze Medal. How can this be? Vandy

The event the man is competing in is not the long jump.

It doesn't say he sets the world record for doing anything GOOD...so I think that he set the world record for WORST jump, therefore placing in last and not winning in medals.

There's practice rounds and things of that nature that don't count in the actual event so he probably did a world record long jump in practice, but not during the actual event.

It's the Decathalon, in which the long jump is simply one event in a one-medal contest of 10 events?

There are a number of answers listed above that fit the bill. They all look like winners to me.

He was the only competitor?

Mihty Fool got it! The mans event was the Decathalon. He set a world record in the long jump, but did so poorly in the other phases of the event that he was not able to medal.
