Arrgh!
Years ago I had a bit I did at the Magic Castle... during the day I was working in the Mail Room of a major PR company and that's where the impetus (as well as my supply of materials) originally came from. In the routine I go through a standard Confabulation styled conversation with a guest. I'd then screw up a card trick... finally, in a quasi-retro hint of the old Old Insurance Policy, I'd mention Harry Houdini and his billing as the "King of Cards" as well as his work many years later, investigating Spirit Mediums. Long story short, I'd remove a sealed Federal Express overnight letter envelope from a book I was holding and lay it on the table. It was addressed to the individual I'd been speaking with (typed... no Swami work!)in care of the Magic Castle... the addressee opened and read the letter "from Houdini"... well the message came from the grave, lent the patron a fair character reading, hit on all the chief points we'd discussed and, in a P.S. asked the patron to look inside the envelope... a second manila envelop fell out. This was torn opened a, not and playing card falls out... it's the missing chosen card! The note reads "Yep! I still haven't lost my touch... HARRY" Believe me, the method used was grossly simple but the delivery of the thing drove folks mad. It was an impossible demonstration in the minds of most... hmmmm, maybe I should put that in a book or just sell it seperate? |

You can tell it's a class act by the gigantic ad for Viagra and the like on the home page. Nice touch. |

I just got a telegram from Uncle Bill.
It reads: "The next time somebody tells you NOT to connect the red and the blue wire together, perhaps you'll listen to them....!" Another gram from Aunt Clara (The family moaner in real life.) reads: "You see, I told you I was sick!" |

They say they don't take messages from any one who is incompetant, or mentally off. Well pardon me but isn't that the prequalification for deciding to give them $5 per word in the first place? What a scam! It's almost as good as buying a pet ghost. At least when you buy a pet ghost, you get a box to keep him/her in. This just lightens your wallet.

It might be interesting to note that even if we save the gullible from this scam there will be another one to take its place. Who is more to blame the the ones that con or those that are so gullible they place thier trust in ludicrous, silly plots.

I don't think everyone realizes that very smart, perceptive people can believe in "weird" things, or be relatively easily deceived or persuaded. Have you ever noticed how a politician can say one thing while doing the opposite, and millions fall for it? Or how powerful advertising is? Most advertising appeals to our subconcious mind, as well as our emotions. Even though we understand how advertising works, we're still quite succeptible to it. |
