Hey guys, another quick question. I have learned quite a few card tricks, the balducci levitation, created a frontal levitation, learned the revolution, and am working on some more coin tricks. What Im looking for is basically some more diversity. I feel like the more I read, the more I feel the same material is being read. I love my cards, but I want to brand out into more different kinds of tricks. What would you guys suggest would be good for the street? Thanks everyone!

Ring & rope (or just rope) and cups & balls are the first categories of effects that leapt to mind. There are loads of threads here on these subjects.

Thanks S2000, that brings up another question I had. Should I use a table, or make my routines more of a walk around kind of thing? Thanks!

Most of the people on this forum will say to get a table. It gives your act more of a home and a place to attract a crowd. You will look more like a magician and take in a better hat.

Rings, silks, ball manipulation, cups and balls, con games, chop cups, mentalism, rubberbands, sponge balls, I could go on for ever!
For the Street: The rings, silks, cups and balls, and con games are very good for the street. They can play big, small, and have a lot of room for the performer to show his/her persona. Those are the favorites of many street magicians.

Also, try reading some of the other posts here.
The questions that you asked have been pretty much asked and answered numerous times before. And it would be a real shame for you to miss out on a lot of good advice. The search on this site works really great now, and you find information from folks who don't come and post everyday. BroDavid

You can always make a table yourself. Or you can buy one from http://www.schoolforscoundrels.com which has a nice street table.

Check out the banner ads for Tabman's work. He too makes a nice table. He now has a street table "in the white" ready for you to stain, finish and cover.
Or, you can go the basic route a lot of us have, and find a Restaurant supply house and buy a waiter's tray stand. They come in standard 32" and tall 38." I have both and prefer the tall stand as I can hang a pouch from it and not have to stoop to reach the bottom of the bag. It may not be as visible to the kids as a shorter table, but after a long day, your back will appreciate it.

Branching out is a great idea. I suggest the rings, cups and balls, and a rope routine.
I do the waiter's tray stand with my TABLE and it works great. see pic #2.

Siberian chain or, better, Burling Hull's Simplex chain escape (one ring at the end of the chain; easy to guide the spectator in getting you bound). Do it FAST, with a hand appearing free to adjust the foulard as soon as they cover your hands with it.
I've used this busking; it packs quite a punch. Steve

Must be an Ohio thing Dr. Midnight. I use the Simplex chain escape at every opportunity. It makes for some great comedy byplay as I send the helper to do something that causes him to turn his back to me, and I wipe my forehead, and the audience goes nuts. So he turns around and looks at me, and I am still chained, and I even have him lift the cloth to check. Then I get him to turn to look for something and do it again. Depending on the audience and the individual helper, this can run several times, and each time the audience gets more vocal and laughs louder.
Hard to find anything easier that you can get so much out of. Another thing with the chain escape, (I don't generally use this combination on the street), I do a combined Iron Garrotte and simplex Chain escape at festivals and paid shows. So right when the garrotte "cuts through" the chains fall to the floor/ground. People then go away talking about how I was "all chained up and escaped right out in the open right before their eyes". The only reason why I don't do the Garrotte on the street, is that I like my street act and the closer for it, just as it is right now. And the Iron Garrotte is too strong to waste as a toss in. Lately I've made it a point to let my cards take a rest on the shelf while I work on some other aspects of my magic. As far as branching out is concerned, I echo the sentiments already expressed by others. I personally love the Cups and Balls, Rope Magic, and TT/Silk stuff. I'm also going to run down Dr. Midnight's escape references as well. They sound like they might serve me well on the street. Hope this is helpful, and good luck.

You really need to read about doing the kind of street magic people on this forum do, rather than David Blaine type street magic. It's as different as mentalism and juggling.
You pick a spot, and gather a crowd. You do an act. You pass the hat. You make money. But you need an act. It doesn't need diversity. It needs quality. If you will concentrate on developing 20 minutes of visual magic that is angleproof that you can involve an audience with, you will have a much better chance of making money busking than if you do the Balducci levitation and a bunch of coin tricks. The magic must be visible by a large crowd. Get Gazzo's book on Krowd Keeping. Get Craven and Evans Street Magic and the Art of War. This will tell you much more.
