Randwill,
I appreciate your practical application. We are just having a philosophical discussion and flexing our magical minds. By the way, what do you consider a good tip? Best regards, Michael

In fact, I would say that for something to be called the GREATEST TRICK, it SHOULD be out of the reach and scope of most performers. Otherwise, we're subscribing to the nonsensical notion that all performers should be considered to be equal in some sense, something that can be refuted fairly easily.

I'm of the "whatever you get the best response from your audience with is the greatest trick" school of performing. I really don't care how difficult the setup or the method is, as long as it works consistently and produces consistent results.
The method should not be discernable by the spectator, so whether it is a well executed sleight or a well constructed gaff that does the job is actually irrelevant. If you find a piece that consistently gets astounding response from your clientele, then that should become your signature trick. Good luck finding something that fills the bill for you.

Ditto to what Bill just said. It's the reason that "What's the best?" questions can't be meaningfully answered by naming a particular effect.

What is the best this? or What is the best that? questions are constantly asked by newcomers to magic who don't understand the subjective nature of the question and the dynamics of performing for live paying audiences.
What is the best for one magician, in one situation, isn't even in the top ten for another magician in another circumstance. It is too bad that so much bandwidth is wasted on questions like that. BroDavid

I think the reviewer was simply looking for a few of our favourite effects that he may be able to look into. Why can't we just help him out and answer his question. He wants your OPINION.
My favourite trick of 2005 has to be New World by Dean Dill and Micheal Webber. |

Walsall - amen - that's exactly what I was saying. I thought the motto of the Café was "magicians helping magicians".
Maybe we should rephrase the question, "what, in your professional opinion, is the best new trick you've seen this year"? There you go. - Paulie. |

As BroDavid and other members have said , THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GREATEST TRICK. If you come up with a "greatest" trick then what about the chap who invented that trick ?? What about the chap who performed in such way that it looked great ?? Would you still put the trick first and then think about the performer and the inventor ?? Its the hands who performs that counts and not the trick. I've seen ali bongo perform "stiff rope" that ill remember for the rest of my life and I've seen guys perform something that I've forgotten the very next minute. Try and find a way to make a trick look good and stop looking for "the greatest trick" if you are looking for one , you'll never find it. Not everbody has the talent to make a simple trick look great, otherwise we wont be talking here on the boards for such a lenth. :kewl: |

It is one thing to honestly seek advice, and the first place to do that is by using the search advice. If someone seeks advice after having done that, they will receive enough to satisfy the most curious mind.
But if they just want to either seek the easy way (and also the lazy way) they just start asking questions that have mostly been answered before. And if the just want to indulge themselves in a heavy dose of delusional self importance, they posture and with questions like what is best ever...trick, performer, etc. Folks who really want help get it here regularly. I was new here once too. And I know what it is like to have questions. But even way back then, there was rich field of knowledge that could be searched - even though the old search was slow and pretty ineffective. Now we has a very fast, excellent search and it seems like more and more people want to post their questions first. Usually the ones who are serious take "use the search facility" suggestion as it is intended, as productive advice, and then only return to that same question with knowledgeable insights and questions whose answers will be of greater value to everyone. Folks who just want to pretend they are important, only waste everyone's time with general questions that have no answer, as if they are clever to have asked such a question. And in my opinion, they simply ought to be ignored. BroDavid

One thing I've learned is that how a question is asked will greatly alter the kind of responses it gets. Although I also agree that some are being a little to sarcastic in here. Others are being to to quick to point out the grammar mistakes of a post but we have grammar hosts here. It qwould be easier to just let a host know about it but the hosts are quietly fixing mistakes while others are just rubbing it in peoples faces. But, that's life and we're all different.
Perhaps, "What is your favorite trick of 2005?" would have made it harder to give those sarcastic responses. As for me I haven't picked up anything this year to really have a favorite yet. I'm sure my favorite won't be everyones but I'll be sure to post any discoveries when I find one that really strikes my fancy. Ron Jaxon |

I learned a trick from the Paul Harris series 'The Art of Astonishment' that I believe fits all the criteria set forth so far. It involves borrowing a dollar bill from a spectator and during the course of conversation you ask them if they notice any thing unusual about their bill, and after a while they notice that "THEIR" name appears where the Secretary of Treasury name usually is. Used with the right presentation this will blow most peoples minds, especially if you didn't previously know them. It requires preparation and some skill, but is actually fairly easy to perform, and a real killer under the right circumstances.

....the one where you end with revealing the identity of a card that was previously and randomly chosen by a spectator....that's one of my favourites...(for tricks involving cards anyway.)

Not wanting to blow smoke up Ron's ass - but I *really* get great reactions from his "VCR" rising card a la cardiographic effect. I ordered it at the back end of 2004 and as I live in the UK it arrived a couple of days into 2005.
Does that, courtesy of the dreadful royal mail in this country, count in the favourite trick of 2005 thusfar? :O) |
