I can't remember the name of the study, though I want to say it's F.A.C.T. that essentially studied and analyzed every facial movement and muscle. What it did was to analyze what muscles moved when a person was lying, telling the truth, stressed or relaxed. From what I've heard it's a study being utilized by the government as well for interrogation purposes and could be used for as an incredibly useful tool for a cold reading of someone. Does anyone else know anything about this study at all?

I had first heard of the Facial Action Coding System and microexpressions by mention of this potential use in interrogation some years ago. FACS is a comprehensive coding of the components of human facial expression allowing their precise documentation. It doesn’t list what muscles move when a person is lying only every movement possible for classification purposes. Several studies do reference FACS in relation to lying; the only ones I know are those by Paul Ekman.
Click Here! and Here! http://face-and-emotion.com http://www.paulekman.com I’d recommend any of Paul Ekmans works/CDROMs as incredibly useful in reading people for fun or fortune. Liebermans book too is a good coverage of non-verbal (and verbal) patterns of lying. However, his aim is getting you the practical knowledge and if you a researching for a dissertation there are more detailed resources. Click Here! Nick. |

Thanks Nick!
I just saw reference to this on LAW & ORDER the other night (the Martin Short episode)... but then, that's probably where Grimm gained his inspiration to research this idea as well. ;-) |
