Does anyone have any tips for doing close up magic on a stage? I know it's probably not a good idea to begin with, but could I use a camera or something so the audience can see? Thanks for any help.
Just in case, the trick I'm thinking of is a murder mystery by Bob Longe. |

What many of the "big boys" do in Vegas along the strip is have a large screen on the side of the stage displaying the video, while a cameraman is filming closeup on their hands. Steve Wyrick does this when he performs "Sam the Bellhop" while sitting at a card table on stage.

Study Nate Leipzig. He made a career out of performing close-up magic on stage.

Also - invite a circle of people to come and watch you - that helps with the "trust factor."

You can play close up effects VERY big on stage-
Invisible Deck Chicago Opener - have 2 specs on stage, one of them holds the card that changes color in between their palms. Cards Across Card on Forehead Card to pocket/51 to Pocket One coin routine (using at least a dollar sized coin with a jumbo ending) Mental routines can play HUGE check out David Regals "A Journey to Love" in his Constant Fooling book - GREAT ROUTINE. Homing card preferably with jumbo cards Tonte Multiple selection using a dribble force then control all selected cards and find them all in a different and therefor ENTERTAINING way. You just have to decide which tricks you do and love the most and adapt them...it can be done! Good luck. |

If murder mystery is what I think it is then you could use jumbo cards which would make the visibility a lot better.

With this particular Murder Mystery, you have to use the glide. I thought about bigger cards, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to use the glide. If anyone has a different method, I'd love to hear it.

I believe that Doug Brewer has done close-up on stage at events for some carrot-growers association. (I'm not kidding; apparently every carrot that anyone in the US buys goes through these guys.) He's had one or two big screens and apparently it went over well.
I'd suggest that you PM him for the details, suggestions, advice, and whatnot. |

I saw Paul Daniels, several years ago, perform Chop Cup on stage. It was easy to see every detail without a big screen.
Just saw Bob Sheets perform Homing Card with some El Duco Anglo Cards. The cards are about the size of Hoyle Jumbos - a little bigger than poker cards. The indexes are huge! He said that he's used them in thousand seat theatres. I think that a performer, who doesn't use a big screen, pays a lot of attention to their movements and their script. If the audience can't see something clearly, other details will make it clear in their minds what is happening on the stage. |

As twistedace mentioned, there are many card tricks which can be performed on stage. Can't you use such tricks other than Murder Mystery? I think selection of trick is essential in this case.
Although I don't remember Murder Mystery, I think doing Glide on stage is more unnatural than doing it close up. Hideo Kato |

Well, I could do a different tricks. My only problem is where to learn some new ones.

Just remember if people can't see what you are doing at all times you will lose them.

Get a video camera and have it pointed at you when you do the close up part of your show and project that onto a projection screen.
Hope that makes sense. :bluebikes: |
