I have recently gotten the bug for building some stage illusions. I have plans and books on order from Paul Osborne, Jim Steinmeyer, and Andrew Mayne.
In shopping for new effects online, (I live in the sticks) I can usually see demo videos of effects, which is a great use from my new DSL connection. But I have yet to see a demo video for an illusion that you just buy the plans for. Descriptions and stills are sometimes available, though at Hank Lee, a lot of Paul Osborne plans lack even descriptions. But for a better apples/apples comparison, on Andrew Maynes' website, there is a demo for the linking card effect, but not so for spectre cabinet. I would love to be able to see the effect done, before I try to build it. Is this basically because you're buying a plan, not a prop, and they don't want to put up a video so people who make it badly can't come back and say the demo was false advertising or some such nonsense? That's about all I can come up with. I trust all the three above mentioned names, so I am not worried about quality by any means. It's just something I've noticed. |
