Well I finally took plunge to actually get on street and perform this week, I got my license to perform at Covent Garden yesterday and did my first spot today!
What a buzz!!! Had a good couple of crowds for shows, and made a fairly decent hat (I think). I've not made many posts here but do frequently read this section in particular so thanks for all the advice tips etc, they've really helped, Special thanks to ; Gazzo, for his excellent masterclass I did last year and his excellent cups and pouch.(i didn't do melon under hat, will try next week and see if I get better hat!) Danny Hustle for writing Art of Krowd Keeping (been really helpful) Whit Hayden's book on Street Magic too was a great influence too. and all who have posted helpful advice here. If you are going to be around Covent Garden do say "hi!", Can't wait until tomorrow to get back out there! Kindest Regards DAK (Dominick Zwolinski) |

DAK,
Thanks for the kind words but don't forget James in LA for Krowd Keepers. He wrote half, the better half at that. We both got the skinny from Gazzo. Glad to hear. I will do my first, pass the hat, busking this Saturday in Little Rock. I do not have to have a license, but I feel naked without one, so I went and talked to the police, and they sounded like they would be cool and all.
I know this is treated like a secret, so I am not going to be upset if someone doesn't answer on this, but what is the best thing to do with the money as you earn it? I have a bank bag, and my wife will come down during the day and take the money to a bank (or watch the table while I go to the bank) but what do you all do if a bank in not practical? I have thought of a money belt or trying to get the police to watch me to my car. I will try to park as close as I can, but I may have to walk a short ways. I will busk in a busy area during the day where there are lots of merchants and places, but the money worries me.

In South Wales there isn't a license - the problem is that the police have also taken their time to kindly write me a letter stating that they will have to report me to the office of fair trading if I perform. Isn't it great how the police use their time to catch serious criminals?!

Dak,
Danny and I are glad the book helped you. We all have Gazzo to thank. He has a very large and giving heart when it comes to teaching what he lives, breaths, and loves. Good going on your first time out. Have fun, smile a lot, and have fun. Jim

Way to go Dak! Covent Garden eh? Nice place to start out.
But it sure sounds like you did it right; taking the class, reading the material. Nothing like being prepared! Congrats! BroDavid

Hey Dak, thanks for the good report.
I think you are already finding out, as many of the rest of have, that new each day is a learning experience, and then the next day will be richer for it. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted on your progress. BroDavid

Hi Dak
Well done, keep on keeping on. Have you meet James James yet? He is normally down the South Bank, nice guy say hello from me. Mario Chase Where is that in South Wales? My thought is if the Police have to contact fair trading about you, what do they expect them to do, what they cant. What are they going to do when others turn up, send letters! LOL Fair trading deal with traders full stop. Hear is a good one, phone Fair Trading your self and tell them where you are going to perform. You are not selling any thing are you? Remember Fair Trading are not the Law. Sounds like to me the Bobby that sent you this letter has got a lot to learn, he does not know what to do about you. One thing he knows he cant arrest you. LOL Make sure he knows you want to work with him while sticking to your rights. Hear is my advise about your letter, frame it. The difference between Covent Garden, and S Wales pitches is the Garden is private property. You don't need a license to perform in most public high streets, some of the popular ones you might need one but not S Wales. I was a Street Trader when I was a kid and I all ways remember this Bobby saying to me "I own this street you know". I should have never have said it but I replied "Even your uniform is tax payers money, so that makes your ass mine" it figuers he shut me down for the day but I never sore him on the beat again. Over all British Police are good with Street Performers Mario PS "GRAND SLAM" |

Mario,
I am still performing around the place (Porthcawl mostly), but the polizia around here don't have a clue. They told me to contact my local council -- my local council told me to contact the police! Useless. Do you know any good places in S.Wales to perform? I tried Bridgend (really narrow roads and the wide open spaces are traffic-free) and Cardiff (loads of traffic, but the good spots are taken). Any ideas? Cheers, Chase |

Don't work Cardiff!
They've seen a certain local streetworker and that was enough for them Watch out..they might throw stones at you when you perform there..they've seen enough
