I saw two of these marionette like machines on a tv show, most likely on TLC, the learning channel, year and years back. Early 90's most likely. One wasn't really a marionette but more of a robot or automaton. It looked like a man, or the torso of a man, and it played chess. The other looked more like a marionette. It was a little puppet/marionette,doll.. whatever, but it sat on a little trapeze. And what it did was swing from the trapeze and hang by its legs and so forth. I just want to know what they were called and where I can see pictures of them.

Joey,
They are called automata or automatons and have been around for a couple of hundred years. The ones you are referrring to were "rehabilitated" by -- I believe -- John Gaughan. Jim Steinmeyer has also, I believe, done some automata work. Check a major search enging like Google. |

Harry Kellar used to have one in his show called "Psycho". The funny thing is that even when you understand how they work they are amazing to watch. Intricate machinery invented hundreds of years ago that can do such complex tasks are REAL magic.
