I came across this and was wondering if anyone had seen it done or knew anything about it. Thanks!

I saw it on Barry Mitchell's website, and it intrigued me enough to purchase it. It's not magic. It's a bit different, and I'm not certain that I will ever find a place for it in my show. Essentially, it is a glove with an artificial pear attached for a nose, and an artificial banana for a mouth. You also have two spongy eyeballs that are held between your fingers (sort of like multiplying billiard balls).
The gag come from the poem that comes with the prop. The primary gag line is "I'll keep an eye out..." at which point you drop one of the eyeballs. So.... It's not for everyone. However the right personality would no doubt have a lot of fun with it. Scott .

I bought it at one of Barry M's lectures, and so far it is still in the possibility stage.
I have thought of using it with some back up harmonica since it reminded me of a Hee Haw bit. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

Do you add the pieces to the glove/face as you recite the poem or?...i'm wondering if it would be a good opening/intro thing...how long is the poem...does it rhyme or?...thanks for your help with this!

Jeff,
The glove comes with the pear and banana attached. The eyes are held between your first and second -- and third and fourth fingers. I just looked over the poem again. It is 18 lines and filled with puns regarding the banana mouth and pear nose. But the "eyes" have it when it comes to being punny in this poem. There are actually a few places where you drop the eyeball and catch it. Then you replace the eye as you speak the proper line. Obviously, I can't quote the poem because that and the glove are what you are paying for. But that's the gist of the routine. So, Keep and Eye Out For it Hope this helps. Scott .

Scott,
your assistance is greatly appreciated...i'm thankful when any of the Café members take the time to help out one another and I always try to reciprocate...all the best! jeff ps. however, I'm still wondering if it would fit as an opener/warm up kind of thing...i use the david ginn kind of warm up where I talk about a live show and don't forget to clap and don't wait until you get home to laugh and so on...in your opinion, do you see it as an opening bit...or conversely, would you see any fit with a reading theme kind of show? |

Jeff,
The prop itself is really just a silly sort of thing. It looks goofy. The poem is what makes it into a routine of sorts. As is I don't see any tie-in to a reading program. And it's not something I would use for a warm up. However, if you are creative, write your own poem. Fill it with puns and let it tell the kids the rules in a fun way. "I'll keep an eye out for anyone doing this or that" "This show will have a peel to anyone ..." It could be cute, silly, funny ...whatever. It's a glove with fruit on it Scott .

But I don't see any future for the entire routine. He is however recreating the King Midas routine which is a really fun and entertaining routine for any show especially a reading show. I made the routine, props etc but I am going to be purchasing one of the new ones he is making. Here is what he says about the new routine in his email: [barry's quote] READING IS MAGIC IS COMING BACK Briefly A few years ago we retired the Reading is Magic (King Midas) product. HOWEVER, so many magicians have begged me to produce just one more for them that I'm tired of telling people what a pain they are to make. I'm tired of disappointing so many magicians who have seen the routine on one of my DVDs and feel it would be perfect for their school or library show. I must admit it still is one of the best routine I feel I've ever created. THEREFORE, I'm going to make 100 MORE and that's all. They will be called Reading is Magic GOLD EDITION. They will be a little nicer than the original with a nice leather cover and more special parts inside. The routine is exactly the same, just a little nicer stuff. The price is $200 each and they will be made available at Mark Daniels' KIDABRA Convention in August. If you're interested please email me so I can put your name on the list and have one waiting for you at Kidabra. [/barry's quote] John Cesta |
