Name: Card Manipulations
Price: 7-8 pounds From- Amazon Publisher: Dover Type: Paperback/cards Pages: 163 This seems to be one of the lesser known books by Hugard. It contains 165 card stunts and tricks many of which are weird and eccentric (sp?) and there are many sleights not found anywhere else. The book does contain many useable and well known sleights. Including one of the first known descriptions of the Hindu shuffle and lots of palms and controls. You will find controls, shuffles, flourishes, cuts, tricks, colour changes, productions, the list just goes on and on. The book is set out in 5 sections with the contents of each found at the beginning of each section. The book was originally a set of 5 pamplets and they have been put together in here (like Prism). As I said before, many of the sleights, flourishes and tricks in here can't be found anywhere else. There are many gems in the book and things that you will always use. In here there is what seems the basis of and is almost the same as the velvet turnover found in Derren Brown's the Devils Picturebook under the name ' A New Top Change'. A few of my favourite sleights, tricks and flourishes in the book are: Sleights: Substitutes for the Pass-a few methods to control a card to the top Sighting the Top, Bottom and a card in the Middle- 27 methods of doing this Most of the colour changes in the book Flourishes- One Hand Shuffles- 5 methods of doing one handed shuffles Flourish Count- A way of counting cards while showing off at the same time Tricks- Radio Cards- a cards across routine not entirely new but quite easy and very strong. Royal Marriages- A story trick with the kings and queens The Caryle Aces- An ace assembly There are lots more tricks etc in the book that are well worth your time. For £7, this is well worth it and will keep you going for a long time. I 100% recommend getting this and 'More Card Manipulations' which is just as good (I might do a review of it later). Card Manipulations seems to be the more sleight focused of the 2 while More Card Manipulations is more focused on tricks. If you haven't got these books now I advise you to get them as I'm sure you will find a lot you will like and use. Hardly any of the tricks require preparation or gimmicks and just use sleights. 8/10 |

One of the books I learned card magic from. It's dated, that's why Dover puts it out (expired copyright). The sleights, color changes, and flourishes are good. The card tricks are OK but you'll find much better material elsewhere including Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, Greater Magic, and Tarbell among the Classic books.

Card Manipulations: Series 1-5 and Card Tricks and Stunts: More Card Manipulations by Jean Hugard are both great books because they teach you sleights and flourishes that you can not find anywhere else. As mentioned above in this post, the card tricks/effects are not that great. I personally like Jean Hugard’s Expert card technique: Close-up table magic. This book teaches you more sleights and flourishes but has much better card tricks/effects. As Larry mentioned earlier in this post, the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks is a much better book. The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks is mentioned in the Magic Café Forums and is recommended as a book to buy. The best book ever written by Jean Hugard has to be his Royal Road to Card Magic. The Royal Road to Card Magic is a Card Magic "Classic." 718jbpr, if you are going to purchase any of Jean Hugard’s books, I would suggest and recommend that you buy, at least the Royal Road to Card Magic and the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks. I would also buy Jean Hugard’s other three books (Expert card technique: Close-up table magic, Card Manipulations: Series 1-5 and Card Tricks and Stunts: More Card Manipulations) because they are inexpensive and they teach you sleights and flourishes that you can not find anywhere else.
