Let them look inside it if you must, but don't waste valuable time passing your cup for inspection. Does Heifetz pass his violin for inspection? Passing your cards, coins or cups for inspection is one of the sure signs of lack of confidence. It is the behavior of an amateur. If you have a powerful enough personality and are a strong enough performer, you don't need to pass things out. The only reason street performers pass their cups out is to involve the audience. You can pass a Svengali deck for inspection. Did you know that? It will expose the method, but it CAN be examined.

"Please examine this ordinary Chop cup. You'll notice the gimmick here.... You'll notice that it's a completely normal gimmicked chop cup....
No fooling no fakes no trickery involved.... No secret compartments or trap doors... Just this gimmick right here in the bottom of the cup..." hmmm I think you might be on to something Bill!! BINGO!
Seriously, would anyone think of saying: "Here I have a perfectly ordinary pocketknife. Look. It is the same color on both sides. Here, examine it closely." Or Here I have a perfectly ordinary deck of cards, no long cards, no short cards, no marks on the back. There are also no duplicate cards.

The only reason why I would throrouly examine my cups in my routine, or pass them around is to ensure that the cups are empty.
I have had people after a show walk up to me and say that it was great, but that I must have had a trap door for the balls to fall out of. Now it is just there word against mine. Sure at this point I can take one of the cups out and say, no there isn't anything. But what about the rest that thought the same thing, or something close-- that didn't walk up. Dai Vernon Spent a good amount of time in his routine showing THESE CUPS ARE NORMAL AND EMPTY. At times I think he passed them around, or even took a drink out of one of them. For coins: I normally just throw them on the table, cling them together, all that stuff. THEN I start the trick. In coins, do not run when you aren't being chased (this concept can't be used in the c&b only because if they start to chase you in the middle of a C&B routine, you are almost always holding out, or have a ball nested or whatever). Cards: No one ever thinks that cards can be gimmicked. And letting a spectator shufffle the cards makes them feel like they are normal (whether they are or not). That is just my Opinion,

In my cups and balls routine I've yet to ever have to "stress" the emptiness of the cups, the routining does it for me. This is considering that I start the thing with 2 balls loaded that will be seen later (after I've added one to give the appearance of 3). The audience response is almost always a gasp.

I considered the Pringles can... I didn't know where to find the "certain something" or how to affix it properly! I did think of using rolled up dollar bills with the other "c.s." inside!

As I recall, Don Alan Started his routine with the Stetment, " Step inside, walk around and make sure there are no trap doors." He did. But hs didn't pass the cup around. When I saw him do it, he held onto the cup and allowed them to put their fingers inside it. And that was just for a few moments. Don's routine was timed down to a gnat's butt. Neither one of them wasted a lot of time on this phase of the routine, because it really wasn't relevant. A lot of it depends on how you phrase it. Sometimes when I do the chop cup routine, I tell the volunteer to look into the cup "Do you see anything in the cup?" I'll hold it up to his nose and say, "Do you smell anything in the cup?" Then I hold it against his ear and say, "Do you hear anything in the cup? That's interesting, I got this from King Henry V, not the king, but the pub. According to the legend, if you hold it up to your ear, you cah hear the sound of a beer tap." But they don't get to play with the cup.

Re: examination of props.
In Magical Ways and Means on pp xv, xv1, Al Baker tells the story of a magician who was working the melodrama at a traveling show. He was doubling as the villain. At a certain point in the play, he was to stab the hero. When the play was over, the hero said, "Hey, fellow! You nearly killed me with that dagger tonight. Why didn't you use the rubber knife we gave you?" "Because I couldn't pass it for examination." There are times when it is a non-issue.

I thought the original poster was going to say talk about doing a chop cup routine with literally one ball and one cup, non gaffed, which I already do.

Seriously, in a routine I learned from Joe Mogar I start by handing out "my grandfathers pen knife" This immediately vanishes from my hand and reappears in my pocket. True, I never let them be handled again, but it has been an effective opener for me. They just held something that disappeared right before their eyes, or at least that's the effect I am going for. I have yet to hand out a chop cup. I carry the mini cup with me when working parties and no one has questioned it. I guess it reminds them of a shot glass? When doing kids shows I have kids holding all different props at various times. It gets them involved and makes it more fun. Also, the person booking me gets pictures of the kids which they like a lot.
