Ok! My first kid's show where I get paid is today! It starts in 3 hours 40 min. The show is about 19 minutes long and then I do some balloon sculpture. I know this is bit late, so I can't change my program anymore, but let me know what you think and wish me good luck!
There are about 12 children age 7-8 years old and it is a birthday party in my neighborhood, so it isn't very far away. I have made couple (6) balloons premade and I do the rest of them there. Here is my program: This is quick translation from finnish so my patter is bit better than you maybe understand from here! After I have introduced myself I start with Miser's Dream with patter which is maybe bit bad but it suits well to my mouth: Ok I have come here to show you some magic and I'm sure we'll have some fun tonight. But before we go on we have to collect all extra things away and there is my miser's dream. Then when I come to Birthday girl there comes more than one. Then I go on with color monte I tell : Here is one old story listen carefully, you'll learn a lot from this. My patter is just Young man and Old Man. Then I have some fun with stiff rope I have great patter for this! After that I go on with Lasso cut and restored rope with well hope this rope is nicer than that other. Then some sponge ball tricks about 3 min with volunteer. Then some TT magic sith silk. After that my brave effort- Svengali deck routine. For children :S I think it works good because it is VERY visual. At last I go with Daryl's rope routine and when it is end I say: Because everyone was so nice today I have/make some balloon animals to all of you! Hope this is good from your view. Any last place tips? You'll hear of me tonight or tomorrow with whole story. Bennie

Good Luck, Go for it and if it is a friend, try tape recording it so you can view it for improvement.
Thank everyone as you leave, and tell them how much you enjoyed performing for them. Since it's 3 hours away, there is no need to comments at this time, changing what you have practiced at this time would not be in your best interest. Most importantly enjoy yourself, you'll do fine for the first. We've all been there.

Oh those first show jitters, I remember it so well. Your show sounds great as you have a variety of effects. My best advice is just like Dennis...
Have fun! |

Good luck with this show, but don't get too attached to it! I'm sure your show will change dramatically over the next year or more. You will find out what the kids like, and what doesn't work at all, and hopefully you will learn as you go and alter your show accordingly. You will have to decide whether it is the effect itself that doesn't work for the kids, or if it's the presentation you are using.
To be specific to your show you listed, you may find that effects like Color Monte and the Svengali Deck may not work well for large groups of young kids. Card tricks in general, are not usually received well by young kids. But more importantly, bigger groups won't all be able to see the cards so well. Another tip is to throw some gag wands, spring snakes, rubber chicken, joke items, etc., into your act. As a children's entertainer, it is almost more important to make them laugh than to amaze them with your magical abilities.

The 7-8 year olds will love your act.
My advice is to make sure that you are all packed up and ready to go early. Relax to some music before you go to the gig. Enjoy your introduction (don't rush to the tricks). Misers Dream is very interactive, enjoy it (don't rush it). If you find that you are taking up more time than you planned, then you will be right on track. Don't be afraid to cut out one of your routines (end on time). Enjoy it. I am also new to performing magic. I remember how nervous I felt on my first performance. So do what you can to enjoy yourself. It will show through to the children. Good luck, Mike

Hi! The show is now ended. Everything went extremely well.
They had fun, I had fun and I even got another booking! Like Dennis suggested I asked them to video tape it with my vid cam they said just sure. Here is VERY detailled story: I came there when the children were eating. I set up all my things and checked fifteen times that everything is alright. They asked if I want something to eat (cake, popcorn), I said no thanks but I could drink some soda or something. When I was waiting and they were eating the Dad told something to children about magicians and couple jokes. Then he said that do you know how you have to be in magicians and told couple rules (be quiet and concentrate etc). Then he said that all the time you have to give applause or the magician goes home. That helped me alot, and I was pretty pleased when my thing became bit easier. When they were finished eating I started my show. They sat down on the sofa. First I made hat to birtday kid and said that now she's distinguished from the other because she is birthday "hero" (don't know what is right word in English). Then I continued with Miser's dream with patter that we have to collect all extra away. Now when I think, I think I rushed the trick a bit. Well not much but a bit. Next time I slow down. They laughed and it went very good! reaction was good Then color monte went good but not very good. Like you said and I expected the reaction wasn't so great but they were happily suprised when there were three same cards and so on. And at the end it was funny. Their eyes were like WOO! bit laugh and applause. But not that big I noticed. Stiff rope. That good old stiff rope. It was great for them and I think my patter was really good. Atleast it worked extremely well. First I said that do you know how do you make rope stiff? Somebody said Naah I know I saw one magician in tv doing that (famous Finnish magician) I acted like I didn't hear him and I continued well like this! (Keep both ends in my hand and pull ) . *laughing* Then I said do you know how do you make rope stiff when you keep only one end in your hand. *silent* I continued well like this (put the other end pointing downwards and kept other end in my hand upper) *Laughing* Then I said but this don't you propably know: STIFF ROPE! (kept hand in the middle) then I continued well now when we have this rope in stiff (Plots again normal) "aarg!. Well we can do normal rope tricks now when this is (JOINKS stiff) the girls said naa the other one did it too. I said well I am as good as him!.. then I continued ."aa!" Okay now when we have this rope sti..(Plots!) "ahaa! Now I know: let's close the ears of this rope so that it can't hear us. Act like we want it to be normal but actually we want it to be stiff! "okay now I want you rope to be normal (JOINKS!) Ha I knew it! it is easy to cheat rope (Plots) Arr! when I have hear other rope. Red bit thinner than that other stupid one. great reactions big applaudes and VERY MUCH LAUGHING Then I made that Lasso cut and restored rope from Mark Wilson's book. Reaction again good. After that I asked the birthday girl to come volunteer and made him Sponge ball routine. First there comes a ball from middle of her hand (from palm). after that I saw it to two pieces. Then I ask which ball do you prefer. "That one" okay do you want to disappear this ball hard or easy way "HARD HARD!" Well we'll use easy way first because I'm not that good magician. I put it to her hand told her to push tight. Then everybody counts to three, she opens her hand, I take the ball of quickly WOO IT IS DISAPPEARD! "Nooo!! it is behind you". Well that was the easy way. Now the hard way--> normal my ball disappear and appears in her hand and then three balls appears in her hand. GREAT REACTIONS. At end I made I put one ball in my pocket other ball in my hand last ball in my pocket--> how many ball I have in my hand "one one,two , one" WOOO ALL three. Again same quickly (THREE THREE) Hey you are on right track. One more time (three three) Nope sirrow!. Reactions great then quick disappearing and appearing silk with TT. small reactions but good! Svengali deck routine went good with one volunteer. Routine was: first chosen card to middle it jumps to top. same again. one more time but the top card isn't their card. I put it to the table. Then chosen card is on bottom. EVERY CARD IS SAME! BOM! Every card is different. and the table card is now their card. reaction was okay. Reations was big from parents but not so good from children like we expekted. Last Daryl's rope routine went good and when I handed the ropes for examination everybody tried to cut the rope with their fingers At the end I made those balloon animals for everybody , they loved them and no one went broken! Then they went do something else and the other paren tcame to talk gave me the money. She said that one of her business friend has children party thursday and they don't have any program to there and she was asked for her that could your magician call so quick time plan. I was: sure that I call her. Then I left in few minutes and parents was just REALLY GOOD REALLY GOOD we can recommend funny etc etc. I asked from the parent is this program good maybe to the other that this same would went well to the party that she gave number. She was yeah yeah of course. So I called to the woman and she said they are 5-6 year old 8 girls Thursday near where I live. She asked how it went today I said good great etc. bla bla bla bla bla bla and booking! Now problem! I have two days left should I change color monte and Svengali deck to other tricks because they are so young (5-6years) If yes WHAT? two days left or should I drop them of and just slow down those effects and get that 18minute? maybe one effect more. any ideas I think I have to change them because they are card tricks and there were couple conflict with cards. Sorry my bad English. I had very little time to write this and there are many writing mistakes.

Very good. But I think for this age you must change your program a little bit. Maybe do a Coloring Book or something like run rabbit run. Otherwise it would be nice if you could tell me which props you have, maybe I can help you then more. E-mail me if you want.
See you, Markus |

Bennie90,
Congratulations! Welcome to the world of professional children's entertainers. It sounds like you were well prepared for your show and that everyone was entertained. There is no greater compliment a client can give you than referring you to their friends. As far as changing your show. It depends on how much time you can give it in the next few days. Two days isn't a lot of time and you have to make sure that your new material is just as well prepared as your old material. I would maybe try looking at a couple of self working tricks so you could spend the time working more on the presentation than the execution. Look at some of the standards like, Magic Coloring Book, Spot, Disappearing Bandana. They require less technical ability and more presentation skills. Mike |

Excellent report.
It sounds like you are on your way. The next show will be different. You will have to skip the card tricks. But you can spend more time on your misers dream, and pull out any silly props that you have. You might consider doing more of a routine with balloons, or a simple story with a change bag? Good Luck, Mike

You did well for the first time. I agree with others on the svengalli trick (Card Tricks). The Coloring book is real easy to learn and wooks very well. Start with the pages outlined, have them reach up abg grab an invisible color and color the pages magically, Praise them for doing a great job but if you move your hand like "this" you'll erase the colors, No No Don't ....Lokk the colors are erased, lets color them again.....
The excitment grow and they automatically erase, play with this and do it a third time. This time everyone is erasing hard, and they erase all the lines too (Blank pages) Its easy to do and the wording is a little more than above but you should get the picture. A nice silk production or any production is self working and always goes well. As mentioned, change one trick at a time and feel how the new trick works. Eventually you will have a solid routine. Keep it up and we wish you a fun journey entertaining the little ones.

I like it.
9 and 10 year old boys are too old for Coloring Book and at that age they have played cards before so a deck of cards is not foreign to them. It should be good. Mike |
