Please, keep it coming folks, I'm new to the mentalist thing and want to get a good feel for how folks here REALLY feel about stuff.

Jonathan,
A couple of years a go I saw a lecture (and heard) it, (and 'felt' it, (-my senses are all fully functional)) on Derren, given by Ian Carpenter. - he's a mentalist, and I THINK, he has a 'thank-you' in the back of pure effect. After the lecture we exchanged a few emails as I was 'collecting information' as an NLPer would say. I remember him saying Derren was very very 'sneaky', and that even those foremost in the industry often couldn't figure out much of his 'items'. In my estimation Derren uses 'hot reading' at times, which relates back to Baker Street's penultimate paragraph at the thread's opening. And generally 'keeping a little something back', is a valid and essential part of the mentalist ethos. - As it is with magic in general. But with 'imbedded commands', an Ericksonian or NLPer would argue that they are not deceptive, since such things are given unconsciously by all of us all the time, and that a magician, or mentalist, simply knows how to do consciously, what we all do unconsciously. - I suppose that's them addressing the 'ethics' of 'keeping something back'. Hope that's good info, Jonathan, and doesn't offend the tastes of those more 'in the know' that me - that's just what I've picked up myself. Sorry for writing something sensible, P.

Gosh, this thread used to be marvellous; I'll give it another go.
"Keep a little something back" - It's suggested that Derren does this & that we ought to do the same if we are to perform at his level. But can't we take this out of mentalism & put it into magic in general? A simple sleight of hand is "keeping something back" - that's what magicians do, they don't reveal their methods (or at least the parts the subject wants to know). Does that make the topic redundant? Now, it's been mentioned that I ought to stick to my humorous comments rather than make serious remarks, so I'll end with an arbitrary poem: "The End Of The Affair" I send you poisoned candy through the mail, I set my bomb on your suburban road, I use this poison ink to make you die, I haunt your marriage like the magic toad, This needling nib reddens your reptile eye, It may - but I am the black-legged spider now, Upon your bedroom wall, Wait, on his bed, and watch me, Till I fall. Christ. Pasq.

As long as we're free associating:
Advice from an acting teacher I once had: In your big scene, give it 99%, but never 100%. Never let the audience see your top--your limit. If you hold back just a little, then they don't know what your limit is, and they can fill in with their imaginations. As soon as they see your finite limit you become smaller in the audiences' eyes. Look, my fingers which
touched you and your warmth and crisp littleness - see? do not resemble my fingers. my wrists, hands, which held carefully the soft silence of you, and your body, smile, eyes, feet, hands, are different from what they were. my arms, in which all of you lay folded quietly, like a leaf or some flower newly made by spring herself, are not my arms. I do not recognise as myself this which I find before me in a mirror, I do not believe I have ever been these things, someone who you love, who is taller and slenderer than myself, has entered and become such lips as I use to talk with. a new person is alive, and gestures with my - or is it perhaps you, who with my voice is playing. ee cummings.

Moriarty, I presume....
Isn't part of magic (and mentalism) - in many sources - say one of the goals is to let the specs see your effects and then as a result be left thinking what you can REALLY do.... however, I do believe you can still give 100% - strive to constantly do the best performance and methods/tech you can - but the presentation/methods done have within it the purpose of creating the mystery of your full powers.... e.g. take B'wave for example - or a magician's choice - you likely often get the "but what if I chose the other card / object / whatever???" - I'm hoping you are working at 100% to deliver the proper response based on your character and premise... either leaving them the thought you can see the future - you can control their actions - you are a source of mystery where strange things occur around you... Maybe we are saying the same thing - you APPEAR to be holding back - but in fact the inner life of the effect you are going at 100%+ to pull it off? Even "lying" requires masterful effort - and I shall go on praising people like Patrick Redford who develop verbal and nonverbal deceptions to the nth degree... The game is afoot! (Hmm... bizarrist thoughts arising)....

I know a place in the South of the USA were such thoughts are taking shape.
