Sideshow is often connected to magic. Many magicians also fancy themselves as sideshow performers and vice versa (myself included in one of these lots).
So what I’m here to ask is can you guys think of any stunts/tricks that really bridge the gap? There are several sideshow stunts that we all know are nothing but magic tricks (razor/needle on string and the like) and I don’t mean those. The problem with those is that while they’re tricks… they tend to look too much like the real thing. So much so that you can easily convince people that they’re real (especially when they’re thrown in the middle of a set of genuine sideshow stunts). What I mean is a more genuine mix of both. So you have a trick and a stunt that are distinct parts of the same performance piece. Examples that I can come up with off the top of my head would be Curtis Kam’s The Rat Pack or (for those of you that have seen me do it) my Card Strait Jacket. Cheers, -Matt (TK) |

I think it's only the "purists" who care, and most of them use trickery too. Look at a guy whose name begins with a Z, doing the thread trick, and passing it off as a stunt, while decrying the use of magic and trickery.
I solve the problem, by telling the audience, when it's a trick, though not necessarily how it's done. That way, they can maintain the respecdt for the stunt, that we like them to do. I think the audience doesn't care. They just want to be entertained.

I try to mix my actual sideshow skills with some magic as much as I can to keep people off track. Somthing that's out there that jumps to mind would be using regurgitation to bring up a folded card for an ultra clean card to mouth. This uses the freak bit in a covert maner. I belive this is somthing Mr. Star does when hes in the mood to do card bits. Also paul h.'s "the boomarang card and the art of zen" effect mixes card throughing and a ruse for a "ripping" good effect. I try and think of more... sorry I'm of no use I've been up two days. YAHOO!!!
Ok wait here is somthing well within the reach of a sword swallower think of it like this Matt... there are things other than swords you can swallow. Things that might take diffrent shape if you so minipulated them to be. Matt pm me for the details. Antom |
