What is the most realistic commercially available thumb tip? Regretfully, I am unable to travel to the UK for a custom job, though it would be a nice excuse to get away. I've always used traditional thumb tips for vanishes, etc., but I am looking to conceal a magnet for a particular close up routine and wondered if any commercial TTs were even more stealth. Does anyone have experience with these?
Thanks, Dan. |

I have half a dozen different ones...plastic, rubber, vinyl...
The one I always can depend on is the Vernet. It is slightly transluscent, and with a red silk inside, it is virtually indetectible. Another winner is the one that comes with the D'Lite Deluxe package w/video. It is the same TT as the D'lite. What makes this a great TT for me, is the color. It matches my skintone exactly. I can point it right at you from a few feet away. It cannot be distinguished from a real thumb! Problem is, the vacuum effect. That's why I use the Vernet for things like billet switching, or $1 to $100 bill...it is my overall most useful. You CANNOT go wrong with Vernet. Just get BOTH regular and jumbo. You'll use 'em BOTH...guaranteed! Cheers! Doug |

Doug - THanks for your reply. I may try to modify a D'Lite and see how it goes.
Brian - I saw that on the web but not in person. I thought someone might have had experience with it here. I appreciate all of the input. Dan. |

Why no try asking around if someone has used the thumbtip from hottrix.com?

I seen a thread on the Café about a TT that is made by a special effects artist for movies. He will make you a TT from your own thumb inpression. You buy a kit and send it back to him. The kit cost $75. Maybe you can find this thread and look into it.
If you are seeking the perfect TT. I would suggest that it is not necessary, as the audience is not suppose to see the TT in your performances. The reason that it is made this way, is because if it 'flashes' they will not notice anything. Even if you can get a 'perfect' match, then they will want to know why your thumb is so much longer. Is that a birth defect or why do you have two knuckles. |

I guess in some moves and routines, a realistic thumb tip is ideal and will work the way you need it to. However, I make sure to tell my students to never rely on the TT as an exscuse not to learn proper handling and usage of it. When I teach the TT, to prove this concept, I spray painted one of them white. I did the routine with this white TT and the students see nothing. This helps them to learn some of the basic moves first and not to rely on the TT so much.

When using a thumbtip, I usually will point the thumb and fingers straight at the audience (as you do when showing the hand "empty"), thereby hiding the length of the unit.
I know what you mean, tho' Bill...the original method was to keep it hidden...a magi once showed me the cigarette/hanky trick using a CHROME TT! I never saw it. Cheers! Doug |

This is what you are looking for, from Keith Lack of Arlen Studio: http://www.arlenstudio.com/new_page_16.htm. Custom made thumb tip. If you can afford it, why not. Having a tip that matches you perfectly opens up all kinds of NEW possibilities that most people won't think of, because they are always thinking of hiding it, and what has historically been done in the past - you may not have to hide this one, and it'll still be hidden.
Good luck!

I have the hottrix.com "Thumbs Up" TT. It is amazingly real, even has a fingerprint and painted fingernail. Less than $15 each is a great price for this quality. I have the soft and the hard, they both are great but the soft one looks more like my thumb. But for everyday magic (I varry a TT with me all the time)a cheap $3.00 tip is just as effective as a $100 TT. Keep the thumb pointed to your audience and also touch your middle finger on the TT. It is a nice look and also hides the tt a bit more. ~al~

A quick search shows that Keith Arlen Lack was the owner of Arlen Studios in England. His products are on some English web sites, but that could be residual stock. I would say he is most likely out of business, and only working wholesale.
