Grimoire Strange
I noticed you were looking at my book here. Fantastic isn’t it? It has been in my family for six generations. It’s a sort of family Bible, if you will. It is a guide to spirituality, mysticism and natural law. Well…really it is a guide to supernatural law.” After a slight uncomfortable pause… “Do you believe in Magic? Well, my family has for the past three hundred years at least, as far as I know. This book is our record. Every family member that has “the sight” gets handed down this book to learn from and record their own illuminations in. This book is a passport to ….God.” “Three hundred and thirty eight years ago this book was first made. Three hundred and thirty eight years ago it was very dangerous to own this book. As you are probably well aware those caught practicing magic like this were frequently burned. Over a million people were burned in the course of four centuries actually. My distant relative was well aware this fact. So, of course she went to great lengths to hide her craft. If you flip through the pages they are all apparently blank.” The Magi unbuckles the leather cover and opens the old tome. Flipping through the pages it is obvious the book is blank. The Magi looks apprehensive, as if not knowing where the conversation should go. “Would you like to see something really interesting? I don’t normally show people this, but I feel like I can trust you. Can you keep a secret? You see right know the pages are bound from prying eyes. Right now the secrets are bound and only a member of the bloodline can set them free.” The Magi pulls a straight pin from the spine of the book. Carefully he pricks his finger and rubs the blood into the large dark stain on the front of the book. After several tense minutes of deep breathing and soft muttering the Magi’s eye open. “Look now. Can you see the pages? The writings have been revealed.” The magi flips through the book, and surprisingly the pages are full of calligraphy, spells and alchemical drawings in a heavy black ink. What did you see? Did you see the pages in red or black? You saw black? Interesting. Put your hands over the cover of the book. Be very careful not to touch the book. You can feel the energy contained within. Did you feel your fingers tingle? Breathe deeply. Try un-focus your eyes. Breathe. Now try looking at the book again. Again the Magi flips through the pages. This time the book is written in a bright red. There are only magical symbols and diagrams. The book’s contents have completely changed. “Can you see?” the Magi asks? “Can you see the magic? Excellent. Welcome to a larger world.” |

I have to admit, I didn't think the coloring book would ever come back to "Haunt me!" lol Job well done! Magickman

I get the Coloring Book angle, but is there a way to do this with accessible and safe chemicals.
This would go great with a Grimoirum Verum theme where the missing sigil of Scirlin is revealed. In other words teach the Caspar too. |

Another version I have pieced together is to use invisible UV ink. A black light bulb cleverly positioned and the book will glow with magickal letters. Actually I did this with a piece of paper, but it is not a huge mental leap to apply the principle to a book.

'In Lizzy's Hand' might go well with this too as a visual method to reveal the text.

Ok, I'll ask a "most-likely" stupid question....and I hate the coloring book and find this one irresistable....did you guess gaf up a book or actually buy this one. If you bought it, where? I do a halloween show and this would be a great opener....I don't have a lot of time to make one up, so buying it would be better.
Thanks! Chris PS> Peter, I saw a show you did at the St. Louis convention a few years back....but I would love to see your bizarre show! Let me know if and when you'll be down around the St. Louis area again and if you'll be doing any... |

I am in the process of building this one, it will take a long time because it has to meet my vision - it has to be hand drawn, written...etc.
The book alone I chose...blank is worth 50 bucks. My first version though was an appearing Hustler that I made for a Burlesque show I performed in. It got such a good reaction I just had to bizarre it up. |

Guys, you might find some things here to be useful if you make your own. It might save you some time, even.
I found this site by way of another thread here about 2 months ago. It's called, "Prophounds and Tomewhores !" http://www.apocprod.com/Pages/tomes.htm This next site, linked from the first, is also way cool: http://www.hyperwerx.net/cthulhu/library.html#texts Both are bookmark worthy. While we're at it.. http://www.miskatonic.net/pickman/mythos/tome.htm ( How to make a tome ) I bought this book at Hot Topic a few weeks ago, but I don't think it lends itself well to flipping through. I was going to just use it as a prop, or maybe even make it a flaming book (I have the perfect gimmick for it - Jim Pace's Flaming Comic Book) Click here to view attached image.

A few years back, I made a "Book of Souls" using a metal spirial bound artist sketchpad. It was standard book size and about 4" thick. I went to a local leather craft store and picked up some scraps of deerskin for next to nothing and proceeded to cover the book using 3m cement. I soaked the pages in a strong tea and made sure to leave the book it outside a couple of times. It went with me to the desert every year for 7 years. The book is also an excelent way to practice one's caligraphy.
Its a bit of work to get a new book to look old. I commend anyone for doing it. And this is my 100th post. Yay me! Here is a site that does some really nice blank books: http://brahmsbookworks.com/id2.html Expensive, but gorgeous. |

Wow Khopri, nice books !! Exactly as you said, gorgeous, but $300 seems to be the minimum. I think I shall stick to making my own.

Aquarius, the journals are really nice, but that metal binding distracts from the cover's beauty. Is there a way to have the journals made using aluminum pins so pages can be added later?

Just surfing around and found this site that sells "aged" blank journals. don't know what the pages look like but this might be a quick way to go:

Those are interesting, but so thin they would not imply the stereotypical "grymoire." I do think they can be used as a visually interesting notepad though.

I found that Bookfactory.com sells a nice sized journal that would be about right: 11 1/4" x 8 7/8", 312 pages. However because its so nicely bound (and done in a modern way) distressing it and making it appear to be from a different era might only fool an average layperson with no experience in ancient books. The bookfactory journal also has printed page numbers in the top corner, so cutting each corner would need to be in order. In other words, way too much work for very little payoff.
What I would like to find is a book that is bound with metal pins that can be unscrewed so you can add pages. Distressing that would be more authentic, but I havent been able to find anything like that. |

This is an excellent idea. But I think is is appropriate to say that this idea comes with the instructions of this prop, which is in my eyes the best prop for such an effect:
"The locked book of dark secrest".... http://www.dragonskull.co.uk/locked_book.htm Magixx
