I know that many of you are horse people. However, I never see any of you discussing live horses on stage or in your magic.
Certainly Lucy and I are not the only ones that do that. Who currently does use a horse or live horses in their act? Bob Magic By Sander |

I am the magic consultant for the world's largest permanent horse show. I have design several illusions for them. We are currently working on a horse teleportation from one end of the arena to the other. here is a link to our site. http://www.Arabian-Nights.com

I am attending a convention this Friday/Saturday in Newberg, Oregon where one stage act is a disappearing horse on stage. The flyer says "Charvet, the Disappearing Horse". I searched the web looking for any additional info on the magician or the act and found nothing. I am not sure who the magician is, if his name is Charvet or the Horse? I will know more by next Saturday and I'll tell you what I find out.

It is David Carvett. I have no idea what the horse's name is.

Carvett or Charvet? I have the flyer, it may be spelled wrong there. I have been trying to research this guy as I do all the performers and I cannot find anything. I have found a David Charvet but no mention of a horse disappearence so I was unsure if this was the same guy.

I'm glad to see some response! Thank you all.
Lucy and I were aware of the dinner theater shows at Dixie Stampede, Arabian Nights and Medieval Knights all around the country but we have not run across another horse in a magic act in many years. John Calvert taught us another horse vanish last August but he doesn't use horses either. I have not even seen them in rodeo contract acts. But there are plenty of animal acts that use horses without the magic tricks. Horse parks have plenty of horse acts too but no magic acts. The Tabman would likely remember when you could ride a real bucking horse at Gilley's. It had a real indoor rodeo arena. I don't know David Carvett but I can see I need to. Our club is very small. I look forward to meeting Michael Barron someday too. Do you know of any others? Barry Mitchell, you should have some information here! Thanks again. Bob Magic By Sander |

Well, I don't do a horse on stage act of any kind, but uncle Harry was famous for one and did it for many years. He had a horse, that was well cared for, more a pet than a work animal. But even in his later years he told many a tale about the trials with that horse. Uncle Pete used to be responsible for the menagerie of the show, and from what Uncle Harry said, wasn't too happy with the horse.
You think rabbits and doves can make a lot of fertilizer, wait til you work with a horse. You can lead them to the pasture, but you can't make them go. And if in the middle of your act they decide to go, well, it ain't exactly the effect you hoped for, but could probably get a laugh. You really gotta love animals to work with them in ur act, and the bigger they are the more you gotta love them. Also as I recall they had to shoe him with special rubber shoes for stage work. Plus, a theater manager might have a few things to say about you bringing in a horse in your act on his stage.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

They will provide a show of their own at some inappropriate times. Lucy and I have at least one theater where we are not allowed to return with a horse in the act.
I wonder if they realize that the horse had an accident and that it was not an editorial about the venue? Bob Magic By Sander |

Now that you mention it, there was a huge indoor rodeo arena at Gilley's Club in Pasadena, TX. Sherwood built it during his third or fourth expansion. He was/is a heck of a man. Like a father to me while I worked there. The work ethic of Tom Joad. During the hayday we (the band) ran into Sherwood in downtown NYC after some kind of movie premier activity. He was wearing his typical outfit. Cheap dungarees, a cheap blue shirt and a jean jacket and no cap or hat. He always wore inexpensive work shoes. He was carrying a beat up cheap plastic briefcase. He bought us lunch and picked up the check for everyone. He paid cash out of that briefcase that he must of had $50k in. He looked like a guy who cleaned up to sweep the street. He had everyone fooled. Thanks for remembering. -=tabman

Tabman,
Life is full of surprises. Some are even planned! I remember talking to what I thought was an average farmer down near Dothan, Alabama about buying into a customer's business. I thought if he could go $20,000 he would be doing what he could. After he looked over things and how the business operated he shocked me with his simple question. "Would you still let me in for $1.6 million for starters?" I knew he raised peanuts because we bought hay from him. I didn't know my horses had such rich friends. Horses will help you meet some interesting people. Perhaps that's an application of "horse sense". Click here to view attached image. |

You can never tell about those old farmers. If they've been there for awhile you know they are smarter than the average bear!!!

Renaissance fairs are new to me. However, it seems that they use horses in the act.
Any experts out there? Lucy is getting responses about her three live unicorns. Except for photos and publicity, how could they use them? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I think the post above this one is by a "smarter than average bear"! |

Well, I don't have a horse trick on my site, but never fear; Spellbinder's here! Jim Gerrish has a new version of Grant's Cow Trick that COULD be adapted for use with a horse. Forget the glass of milk (unless you want to produce a "road apple" in its place). Just do the part where you show a picture of small toy horse (painted to like like your live one waiting in the wings) as you announce "Here's the act you've all been waiting for... Trigger (of whatever his or her name is!)."
Then the toy horse pops out of the picture (see the photo in the description for Jim's Hardboard and Duct Tape Magic Show Book 2 on my site). The audience will be naturally disappointed as they were expecting something a bit larger and not made of plastic. So now you put the toy horse on the floor and transform it into the live horse. How you may ask? Well, here's an idea: Look at Jim's Garden Gate Illusion from his PVC Pipe Book 1, and you'll see that you can make it look more like a ranch fence and gate.

Also on David's site is a pic of him performing this... it says "picture my Pete Biro" which I am guessing as the member here on the Café.

I've been looking for an illusion for vanishing of a horse that can be done in a arena (rodeo) with 360 degree surrounded. I got a few ideal from Hiding The Elephant book of Jim Steinmeyer, but thoughts along the lines livestock dagger vanish (black art)anyone have any ideals? Owln_1

Owln,
Doing it 360 degrees would be tough. But with 270 degrees you can do it. Are people looking down at you? That is a different problem. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
