I know that when I do my tricks, I should present them in a way that the methods are imperceivable. But more than once, a spectator guessed at my methods and hit it right on the nail. What could I say in that situation?

Never let them know they are right. Often it is just a wild guess, they really didn't' see it. I always sort of wink and say, "oh really now? You think it would have to be that complex?"

It doesn't matter if they are right or wrong. Think of it this way...If the spectator guesses the method, that means that they are right. You can't prove them wrong unless you show them how you did the effect, which totally destroys the magical effect you are trying to achieve in the first place. So the only solution to this problem is change your presentation so the only possible way (in the spectator's mind) to do the effect, is magic/supernatural powers/demon possesion/whatever your presentation style fits.
This actually depends on your character and presentation style. Maybe you could give us a little more info on this? We could help you a lot better then. Ryan

Here's what I say...something like this: "Well if that's how you thinks it's done then ok, but I don't reveal my secrets " I show a lot of tricks to friends and people at church and school, and most of the time it's like WOW, but occasionally they will pick up on the double lift, but I can usually talk them into doubting themself. I've had people take my cards and try to redo the trick lol (after they said they know how it's done), and they can't do it like me.

It happens all the time and I think its natural, I say things like; your not very far but not very close either , or you might thing your right but you might be surprise if you actually knew how it was done. But the best thing to do is , just as Jaz said either silly smile or a brush off and move on.

If you smile though, are you not giving away that the spectator is correct?
Thanks for all the help! |

This has happened to me alot. All I do is say is "Believe what you want to." and then continue on with my tricks. If they do it again (which they usually don't) I just repeat it. After that they take the hint and stop guessing. Hope this helps.

Are the effects they rumble self workers? Some smarties are very capable of back tracking along the mental path and this is a weakness in many self working effects.
If they are figuring out effects that use sleight of hand then you may need to examine your execution for flaws. If people are regularly busting you then there is a reason, you don't need some get out line, you need to find out why they are nailing you and fix it. The reason that methods for effects are what they are is because they fool people. If you are doing a classic trick and people figure it out then the problem lies in your performance of it, don't just gloss over it, find it, fix it and onwards!
'though it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way...it would seem that we are all negligent.

You get the very occasional smart alec, who thinks they know the effect - more often than not they are way off the mark. However, if they even THINK they know the method, everyone could start doubting you. If this happens, I tend to hit them with something that they have no idea is possible - If, to keep things simple, I'm doing some card effects, I let them choose a card, shuffle it, I never touch the cards, and name their card straight away - tends to silence them. However, one does not want to embarass someone, so if I'm in a paid performane, I perform one or two more effects for another person, and then move on, to the next table.
That said, make sure your effects are seamless, performed perfectly, and have a viable and entertaining presentation, and these troublemakers will be very few and far between - often they are slightly 'bored', or if you seem at all unsure, they will pick up on it. Hope this helps, Simon |

Wow... I've never thought of doing it like that. Thanks!
They cant tell if ur serious or not, breaks barriers and avoids the question. Just make sure your not smug in saying it.
