Hey there, I'm starting to drift away from the visual compromise of many mental effects and toward the methods of suggestion, hypnosis, and other such 0-prop effects. I understand this will take a great deal of work and is not something to step into with both feet, but I'm prepared to take the challenge.
I'm very interested in Kenton Knepper and want to at least try learning some of his material. My only problem is that he has more books than I can count on the market and I have neither the budget or the assurance that I'll like his work to invest in all of it. So, my question to the Café asks for your opinion... What Kenton Knepper work do you recommend most and why? Thanks for your help! |

The only thing I've read: His little overpriced pamphlet Completely Cold: Verbal manipulation to increase the perceived accuracy of a reading, and to slide the querant into revealing more. Worth every nickel to an active pro reader (like Silvia Brown, who is a master at this type thing) and worthless to the other 95% of the purchasers, simply because it must be used to be of value.

There is the Knepper sampler, might be a start. Though I haven't read it.
Kollosal killer while only a single effect is very strong and will give you a taste of his work that you will certainly use. Completely Cold is worth every penny if you use it and is expensive toilet paper if you don't...but then this is true of everything I guess. Kollosal Killer would be my recommendation as a starting point |

A lot of Kenton’s material contains effects that you might not do. In fact you may buy some of his books and never perform any of the tricks he includes. I find that Kenton's work is more about tools than tricks, at least for me.
Most often Kenton attempts to elaborate on principles and ideas by showing you a trick of his own, or a friends, in which the idea is used. With that said I would tell you that really it all depends on what you want to work on, as there are many books of his that range in style and subject. I personally find Kenton’s work more valuable than many other authors simply because his material is a catalyst of thought for my own material. So if you are looking for instant gratification from effects, I would tell you that you may get disappointed in some of his works. People seem to like Kenton’s material or they don’t. For those who do, which material is the best really can depend on what style of performer they are. If you are interested in suggestion routines, you are bound to run into Kenton’s work. Just take the plunge and buy something that sparks your interest. Miracles of Suggestion might be a good starting point. -Brandon

Not sure what you mean by 0-prop effects. Most of KKs work is still using magic and mentalisms tools and devices but then adds the other dimension of suggestion and mental misdirection. As such its a great way to move from what your doing to augmenting it and then dropping or streamlining the comprimises.
As such most of KKs work has examples of effects and principles . The principles can be applied to other effects. I personally liked Wonder words 2 and miracles of suggestion would certainly establish if Kenton is your man . Manuscripts are not cheap I know . Perhaps you could borrow one or ask someone for an example of Kentons work to see if its for you. http://www.online-visions.com has several articles by him but not his work . Good luck |

Wonder Words is definetely a place to start with Kenton's work. I think that most of his work spans out from these CD's.And maybe "Miracles of Suggestion".
Thanks! Scott B.

I would suggest you read all of KK's before you even consider Jermay.

Wonder Words.
Much of Kenton's thought is based on using linguistics, to make an effect more powerful. And Wonder Words is the basis for his linguistic thought. If you study psych/couseling processes, NLP, etc., you'll already be familiar with much of it. If you're a magician, chances are, you won't. And it can open your eyes to some very good things.

The main idea from NLP as I see it is how do you get people to accept something without questioning it by the way you assume it yourself in your language or behaviour . E.G. If you say "the card is now lost in the pack ", in the back of the mind many people will think " is it ? ". If you say " Make sure you remember where you put it." they will ask "will I remember " but assume it matters because the card would otherwise be lost.
This is JUST AN EXAMPLE .!!!! |
