David Ginn's books helped me to develope my own routines utilizing some of his ideas from kid biz. I think he has had the most effect on me for building a kids act. I also do magic as a magician and have had much success from David's Knowledge. I have seen his lecture many years ago and would never pass up a chance to see him again if he came to my area. I wish I had half as many ideas as he has.

I thought I had a pretty good show for kids a few years back. Then I saw Jon Stetson peform at a library on Cape Cod. He was hilarious. The kids loved him, the parents loved him and the show was entertaining and fun from start to finish. It was a real kick in the pants for me and made me work a lot harder to get a lot better. It taught me the difference between "doing magic tricks" and entertaining an audience. And the show was free. Best bargain in magic I've ever had.

The one kid's magician that has influenced my own show the most is Dave Risley. I've seen a number of magic shows for kids (video and live), and none of them seemed to resonate with me. I enjoyed them, and learned from them, but they just didn't seem to "fit" my style.
When I read Silly Billy's new book, I thought, "Yes, that's the kind of silliness I like to do!" And when I saw several videos of Dave Risley, I said, "That's me! That's how I look and act!" After seeing these videos, I didn't change my style (since that's the way I was already doing it), I simply learned how to work with this style more effectively. Brian |

C. Thomas Magrum.
When I saw him, I was a mute. My family had a lot of stresses going on, and I started to stutter...after a while I could'nt talk at all. I was 8 years old. During 5th grade we had C. Thomas Magrum come into our school and do a magic show...at this point he was in his 80's! He was a master of his craft...very elegant, old school with an assistant (his grand daughter?). He picked me to come up and help him with the water funnel trick. I looked over and saw how he did it. He caught the fact that I saw the gimmick and looked at me (he had no idea of my problem) and asked "A good magician can keep a secret. Can you keep a secret?". I was completely out of my paradigm, and found myself answering "yes" out loud! My teacher in the back literally fell out of her chair and started crying and laughing at the same time (she had tried everything to get me to say even one word). After they told him he was beaming! It took a lot of work after that, but he got me started talking again! After that, my family (parents, relatives, everyone!) bought me all the magic I wanted. It was the first live performance I ever saw....I've had the bug ever since! That's why he's my favorite Magician! :) Chris |

That's a wonderful story Chris. Thanks for sharing.
Who says the magician has no magical powers? Nonsense. The power of a magician can literally change the course of a child's life. Brian |

We really do have the power to work REAL magic. Putting a smile on a kid's face is real magic indeed. I try to also remember that in many cases, I am the first magician a child may have ever seen. If this is true, then I want to give them a lasting impression and a good one at that.

Fred Petrick, aka Mombo the Clown. He was a staple of local television for three decades in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the surrounding states during the 1960's - 80's.

Monk Watson. Sure he was mostly a corporate magician, but he is still among the best comedy magicians, for any age group, that I ever saw. His laugh would have everyone rolling on the floor!
