What are some of the best and the boldest mentalism routines that you do ?

discjockey Elite user 451 Posts |
The pulse stopping, or Twisted palm. they've failed, and I've looked stupid. but they've also hit, and I've been called a supernatural, psychic, etc.

I find, at least for me, that the most powerful mentalism effects are those that are also the most bold in application. For me, there is a certain thrill about using a bold-face-lie as method. It's a risk, that without conviction one has the potential to fail miserably.

"The only way not to get caught is to pull it off right under their nose"...that was advice given to me by Mrs.Dunninger and I took it.
She taught me the best book test in the world and here it is. You go to the back of the room after you explain that you need an extra mind to help you complete a test. After you select your person and as you walk up to the front, you say this very quietly..."when we reach the stage, I'll hand you a book, please turn to page 112 and choose the first word, I'll announce the word you are looking at and you look suprised as if I just read your thoughts, ok "? You know what ? it works and never in 20 years has it failed me...you just have to choose the right person and say the right thing the right way...no worries. ~Rick~ |

Thanks Rick for sharing this. This type of handling is typically Dunninger. Bold but clever.
I agree that sometimes we think too complicated and try to find a sneaky way to hide a move or method. Another example would be Dunningers Chair Prediction. Many performer try to find a clever selcetion process for the chair number. Billets, steals etc. Just on the way from the audience and under disguise of applause aks the person for her number. Everybody who knows this routien and tried it knows how bold but effective this is. Cheers Thomas |

And as far as anyone else in the crowd is concerned, you have just done a miracle... -thomas I might as well add a routine to this post as well. On the front of my business cards I have the 5 E.S.P. symbols printed at the top. I have a spectator circle one without me seeing and then it is placed face down into my SUC. I won't detail the method of the SUC, but the card itself actually ends up on the pile of face down cards that are also in my hand. The SUC goes into a pocket. I casually turn the top card over (it's their card) so they don't see the face and just draw a circle right over the symbol they have already circled. I hand the card back to them face down and ask what symbol they chose. They turn over my card and it matches. No one has ever caught on that I actually gave them back there very own card. And since I don't have to worry about using the SUC for a peek it goes out of play quickly. I came up with this idea based on Tervil from Osterlind's ETMMM... -thomas |

Thomas - funny that your ESP routine (which is GREAT btw) was inspired by Tervil. I was just going to mention Tervil as a really bold routine. Using the spectator's writing as your own - bold and brilliant!
Other bold routines include suggestion routines like Luke Jermay's. You have no prop to rely on, no technical method, just your own guts and conviction. |

Fred, I am a big fan of Jermay also. I love to perform RGM. Like discjockey said, it may not always work but when it does it is so powerfull. When it doesn't work I will follow it up with something foolproof anyway, so I still amaze.

My son is only 14 and has been performing Twisted palm and The Pulse stop for the last year or so after seeing Luke lecture at Kaymar in Upminster. He is now being praised at school for his efforts even though many teachers now see him as some sort of freak!!

Bold is writing the same thing on each slip of paper as you ask your audience to contribute an array of fruits, states, flowers, etc. Or, starting with the slips all the same and miscalling them to demonstrate that they each contain a different name.

Cold Readings and Predictions. I think that you have to be BOLD to do perform these two Mentalist routines. Why? Because you are giving the spectators the belief that you can read minds and that you can predict the future. Cold Readings and Predictions may work or they may not. Gerard

I really like the best of both worlds where you can go for a spectacular trick and still have a good trick right behind it .
An example would be a Koran / mindpower / cassandra deck where your fishing or other patter hits the card straight away . I have started sequencing effects to give a chance for this . Any suggestions for effects that would allow this ? |
